Granted, you can access separate pages for these areas, as well as 22 brain structures or sub-structures, but you have to work from the drop-down menu accessible through the taskbar.
The 3D Brain app for the iPad provides a better user experience than when it is used on the iPhone, as it enables much more of the diagrams to be visible when text is also on the screen. The app could make better use of its interactivity by improving navigation between brain structure diagrams and linking to more content within the app instead of exiting it and having to start from the home screen. But, even as is, 3D Brain provides a good overview of the brain and its structures. Though best for life-science or neuroscience students, there is much that will be of interest to laypeople as well.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - The "fiscal cliff" is only days away and efforts to avert it are making little progress, with some U.S. lawmakers predicting the tax increases and federal spending cuts involved will start taking hold in January, unless a deal comes together very quickly.
If these jolts to the economy are allowed to occur, a recession could follow, economists have forecast.
Consumer spending power suddenly would be reduced if the nation tumbles over the "cliff." The U.S. government's annual tax take would rise by $500 billion, significantly lowering the federal budget deficit, but at a high economic price.
On average, each U.S. household's tax bill would rise by $3,500; for middle-income households, by almost $2,000, according to the Tax Policy Center, a non-partisan think tank.
Here are the key tax increases, spending cuts and other issues that have come to be known as the "fiscal cliff":
TAX MEASURES
* Income tax rates. On December 31, low ordinary income tax rates enacted on a "temporary" basis in 2001 under former Republican President George W. Bush are set to expire.
President Barack Obama, his fellow Democrats and Republicans in Congress agreed at the end of 2010 to extend these rates for two years, but only a few days remain on that timetable.
If Congress and Obama do nothing by December 31, taxes will rise for most Americans. Rates will go up to 15, 28, 31, 36 and 39.6 percent from the present 10, 15, 25, 28, 33 and 35 percent.
Obama and the Democrats want to prevent this by extending the Bush tax rates again, but only for income below $200,000 per individual, or $250,000 per family. For income above that level, they seek a return to the higher, pre-Bush tax rates.
Republicans are divided. Some who oppose tax increases of any kind want the Bush tax rates to be extended at all income levels. Others, including House of Representatives Speaker John Boehner, have supported letting rates rise, but only on incomes above $1 million - a much higher level than Democrats support.
Obama proposed a compromise level of $400,000, but this was spurned by Republicans. Boehner spent several days last week trying to pass a measure in the House, which he leads, with the $1-million threshold. But he lacked the votes and gave up.
Afterward, Boehner said Obama and the Democratic-controlled Senate must work out a compromise. The Senate has returned from its holiday break. The Republican-controlled House has not but is expected to return late on Sunday.
* Investment income tax rates. Bush and Congress in 2003 cut taxes on capital gains and dividends, most of which go to high-income taxpayers. These cuts are set to expire at year-end too.
If no action is taken, the long-term capital gains tax rate will rise to 20 percent from 15 percent for the top four tax brackets. At the bottom, they will rise to 10 percent from zero.
Obama wants to let the capital gains rate rise to 20 percent from 15 percent for income above the $200,000/$250,000 level. Taxes on gains below that would still top out at 15 percent.
Without action from Congress, the dividend tax rate will rise to the ordinary income tax rates for each tax bracket. That would be as high as 39.6 percent for top earners, up from 15 percent now for dividends on qualified, long-term investments.
Obama wants to keep the 15 percent qualified dividend rate cap for most people, but let it rise on income above the $200,000/$250,000 threshold, to 36 percent or 39.6 percent.
* Personal exemption phase-out and itemized deduction limit. These caps on personal exemptions and itemized deductions will return in 2013 if Congress does not intervene. Both apply to upper-income taxpayers and would limit their ability to lower their tax bills. The caps were eliminated in stages by Bush. But the expiration of his tax cuts means the caps would come back.
* Obama healthcare tax. Regardless of what happens with the fiscal cliff, investment income above $200,000/$250,000 will be subject to a new 3.8 percent tax under Obama's healthcare law.
* Alternative minimum tax. The AMT - which prevents upper income taxpayers from slashing their tax bills too much through tax breaks - expired at the end of 2011. That has not had an impact yet because 2012 tax returns have not been filed. The tax is not indexed for inflation. So it is routinely "patched" to prevent tens of millions of upper-middle-class taxpayers from having to start paying it. Both Republicans and Democrats support doing another patch, but have not approved one. The Internal Revenue Service has warned that as many as 100 million taxpayers could face refund delays without an AMT fix.
* Tax breaks. Dozens of individual and business tax breaks expired at the end of 2011, including the research and development credit. There is wide support for extending them again, but businesses will be watching for any faltering.
* Payroll tax. A cut in the payroll tax was extended earlier this year, in an effort to boost the economy. The current 4.2 percent rate paid by about 160 million workers, down from the previous 6.2 percent rate, expires on December 31. Some Democrats, including Obama, back extending the tax cut. The powerful AARP seniors' lobby opposes renewing the cut, fearing the Social Security system that it helps fund will be undermined.
* Estate tax. The estate tax, which applies to assets passed onto heirs, currently stands at 35 percent, after an exemption level of $5 million. With no action, the tax will rise to 55 percent, after excluding the first $1 million of value. Obama wants to raise the tax to 45 percent, with a $3.5 million exemption, but some high-profile Democrats have come out in support of keeping the current tax and exemption levels. Many Republicans want a repeal of what they call the "death tax."
BUDGET MEASURES
* Automatic spending cuts. In a deal last year to raise the U.S. debt ceiling, Obama and Congress agreed to $1.2 trillion in across-the-board spending cuts if lawmakers failed to reach a deficit-cutting deal by January 2. They failed. Now lawmakers fear the cuts, known as a "sequester," could harm the economy. Obama has proposed delaying the cuts for a year.
* Unemployment benefits. Millions of people have been exhausting their government jobless benefits during the economic downturn. Congress has extended the benefits several times. Another deadline comes at year-end. Many Republicans want the extensions to stop, saying they discourage job-hunting. Obama has proposed extending the benefits.
* "Doc fix." Because of an outdated formula in the law, government payments to doctors who treat patients on Medicare, the U.S. health program for the elderly and disabled, are routinely underestimated. If Congress doesn't fix the situation by the end of the year, the doctors face a double-digit cut to their payments, which could lead them to drop Medicare patients.
DEBT CEILING
The Treasury Department on December 26 announced the first in a series of measures to delay by two months or so the day when the government will exceed its legal borrowing authority. Without action, Treasury said the $16.4 trillion debt ceiling would be reached on December 31. Obama wants it raised under a deal to avoid the cliff and he wants new power to raise it himself.

As the Gulf Coast struggles to recover from an outbreak of tornadoes, millions across the nation are waking up this morning on the busiest travel day of the Christmas season to cope with more severe weather that promises to upset the travel plans of millions.
"Traveling will definitely be affected as people go home for the holidays," Bob Oravec, lead forecaster for the National Weather Service, told ABC News. "Anywhere from the Mississippi Valley into the Ohio Valley and the Northeast, there's definitely going to be travel issues as we have heavy snow and some very high winds."
That large storm has been pounding not just the Gulf Coast but most of the South from Oklahoma to Arkansas, and Texas, where Dallas had a rare white Christmas.
In Lubbock, Texas, more than an inch of snow fell, making it difficult for some drivers to stay on the road. At Dallas Fort Worth airport, flights have been delayed as crews worked to de-ice planes.
Oklahoma got about 7 inches of snow across the state, making for treacherous road conditions. A 21-car pile-up in Oklahoma City temporarily shut down a major roadway through the state. No one was seriously injured.
Arkansas also got a rare Christmas Day snow storm, with an estimated 10 inches falling on Fayetteville, Ark., limiting roadway visibility.
All of that snowy weather in the South left a white trail everywhere it went, and today it's expected to bring at least six to eight inches to the lower Midwest. Today's severe weather could cause potential delays at airports in St. Louis, Louisville, Ky., Indianapolis and Cincinnati.
In Northern California, residents were socked with the third storm in three days. Wet weather spread from the Bay area through the Sierras and delayed inbound flights at San Francisco International airport, and caused a landslide in Oakland, almost crushing one driver to death.
"I heard the thing bounce kind of directly right off my roof and I feel pretty lucky," storm damage victim John Monaghan told ABC News.
The severe weather system in the South has been pushing overnight, and a front with heavy rain and wind is forecast for the Northeastern corridor late tonight and into Thursday morning.
"The big cities from Washington up to Philadelphia and New York City will mostly be in the form of rain," Oravec said. "There may be a brief period of snow from the nation's capitol this morning up into Philadelphia and then to New York City. But the track of the storm currently suggests that the precipitation will definitely change over to rain."

Dec. 26, 2012 -- Sales of the prescription weight loss drug Qsymia, the first such drug to get the FDA's OK in 13 years, are increasing, despite earlier reports of sluggish interest.
For the week ending Dec. 7, more than 2,000 new prescriptions for Qsymia were filled, according to Source Healthcare Analytics, a provider of pharmaceutical market data. That compares to 1,163 filled prescriptions for the week ending Nov. 23.
Depending on who you talk to, the drug, which went on sale in mid-September, is a godsend or a disaster.
Gwen Barton, 57, of New York, participated in a Qsymia clinical trial. She dropped 50 pounds in 18 months. She gained back half of that after the trial ended, then started back on the pill in early December.
The pounds came off again. "I have lost 12 pounds so far and I'm very happy,'' she says. She wants to shed another 40 pounds on her 5-foot-5-inch frame to get to 140 pounds.
Barton offered to share her story through the public relations firm for Vivus, the maker of Qsymia.
When the FDA approved the drug earlier in 2012, Sidney Wolfe, MD, director of Public Citizen's Health Research Group, called the decision ''reckless.''
His opinion hasn't changed, he says. "The history of diet drugs is a disaster," he says.
Michael Miller, chief commercial officer at Vivus, declined to release sales figures or quote prescription numbers until January, when fourth quarter results are in.
"We are pleased," he says of sales. "We have been gaining traction."
The drug is only sold through certified mail-order pharmacies whose personnel have finished a Qsymia-provided training program.
That was part of the risk reduction that Vivus agreed to with the FDA.
Average cost of the recommended dose is $160 for a one-month supply, Miller says.
Insurance coverage is not yet common. "About 1 out of 5 prescriptions are covered," he says. "The average co-pay is $50 or $60."
Qsymia combines two drugs already on the market: phentermine and topiramate.

Facebook Chief Executive Mark Zuckerberg is donating nearly $500 million in stock to a Silicon Valley charitable foundation.
The 28-year-old Zuckerberg said he and his wife, Priscilla, earmarked the gift of 18 million Facebook shares for health and education issues.

WASHINGTON (Reuters) - President Barack Obama urged Americans on Saturday to join in solidarity as they mourn the victims of a shooting rampage at a Connecticut elementary school, saying the hearts of parents across the country were "heavy with hurt" for the lives lost.
In his weekly radio and Internet speech, Obama also repeated a message he put forth on Friday, just hours after one of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history, on the need to set aside politics and "take meaningful action to prevent more tragedies like this."
But Obama went no further than that, and again stopped short of specifically calling for tighter gun-control laws.
Twenty children were killed by a heavily armed gunman who opened fire at a school in Newtown, Connecticut, on Friday. He killed at least 26 people there before turning his gun on himself.
"We grieve for the families of those we lost. And we keep in our prayers the parents of those who survived," Obama said.
The shooting spree reignited a debate over gun-control in a country with a flourishing gun culture and a strong gun lobby, which has discouraged most politicians from any major efforts to address the easy availability of firearms.
Obama mostly steered clear of the issue during his successful re-election campaign this year, and it remains unclear whether he might be willing to take a more assertive approach now that he has secured a second term.
OBAMA URGED TO ACT
New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg, who runs a coalition of mayors on gun policy, said on Friday the Democratic president should press ahead despite likely opposition from Republicans who control the U.S. House of Representatives.
"We have heard all the rhetoric before. What we have not seen is leadership - not from the White House and not from Congress. That must end today," Bloomberg said in a statement.
Ticking off some of the recent shooting incidents, Obama said in his Saturday address: "As a nation, we have endured far too many of these tragedies in the last few years."
His response to previous high-profile shootings was to call for a national conversation on how to curb gun violence.
"This weekend, Michelle and I are doing what I know every parent is doing - holding our children as close as we can and reminding them how much we love them," he said.
"There are families in Connecticut who can't do that today. And they need all of us now," he said. "All of us can extend a hand to those in need - to remind them that we are there for them, that we are praying for them."
The 20-year-old gunman, who law enforcement sources identified as Adam Lanza, opened fire on a classroom at Sandy Hook Elementary School, which serves children from ages 5 to 10.
Authorities found 18 children and seven adults, including the gunman, dead at the school, and two children were pronounced dead later after being taken to a hospital.
"Most of those who died were just young children with their whole lives ahead of them. And every parent in America has a heart heavy with hurt," Obama said.
Obama had to struggle to control his emotions during his televised statement on Friday in the White House briefing where his voice cracked and he wiped away tears.
Partisan bickering in Washington, divided by a battle over a looming "fiscal cliff" of tax hikes and spending cuts, was put on hold amid mourning for the Connecticut dead.
House Speaker John Boehner, the top Republican in Congress, said he had canceled the Republican weekly address for Saturday "so that President Obama can speak for the entire nation at this time of mourning."

Matolcsy, a member of Prime Minister Viktor Orban's government that has often clashed with the bank over policy, also said the bank would have to focus on helping growth and employment as well as curbing inflation.
"I don't think that in these crisis years any central bank in the world would and could keep only one aspect in the forefront: the aspect of inflation," Matolcsy told public radio.
"Just look at how the European Central Bank has switched to an entirely different monetary philosophy in the crisis years post-2008."
Orban's government has put pressure on the central bank to do more to help the recession-hit economy and some analysts have said the appointment of a new governor at the National Bank of Hungary in March 2013 could usher in an era of unconventional steps, after a series of rate cuts this year.
Citing inflation risks, outgoing governor Andras Simor and his two deputies have opposed the bank's recent rate cuts, which were pushed through by the four other rate-setters appointed by Orban's party in parliament last year.
Simor's six-year term expires in March, and his two deputies will also leave the bank next year. Orban is expected to pick a new governor loyal to his government.
Matolcsy's name as a candidate has also emerged in the market and local media. When asked about this, he said:
"There are many names floating around these days and weeks, but I myself have not received such a request, but I am sure, as this has been mentioned, that next year Hungary's central bank will have a leadership that will be in a strategic partnership with the government."
ECB President Mario Draghi said last week in Budapest that Hungary's central bank must retain its independence to be credible - a rare public warning about undue political influence.
Matolcsy, who has been the architect of unorthodox policies that included heavy taxes on banks and a nationalisation of private pension funds, also said he was not sure Hungary should tap international markets next year, after it successfully financed debt from domestic issuance in 2012.
"As for myself, I'm not quite sure that we should issue a foreign currency bond in global markets next year," he said.
Earlier this month, the minister in charge of Hungary's stalled loan talks with the IMF, flagged a possible foreign currency issue in the first quarter of 2013.
Budapest has rolled over expiring debt from domestic issuance since it last tapped international markets in 2011 and has financing buffers deposited at the central bank.
Matolcsy also said Hungary's economy could grow faster next year than the government's current projection for 0.9 percent.
He said the economy could be able to grow faster than 1 percent, perhaps even closer to a rate of 2 percent.
Analysts in a Reuters poll this week forecast stagnation for 2013 after a contraction this year.
