Seeing inside tissue

Tuesday, June 26, 2012

Imagine if doctors could perform surgery without ever having to cut through your skin. Or if they could diagnose cancer by seeing tumors inside the body with a procedure that is as simple as an ultrasound. Thanks to a technique developed by engineers at the California Institute of Technology (Caltech), all of that may be possible in the not-so-distant future.

The new method enables researchers to focus light efficiently inside biological tissue. While the previous limit for how deep light could be focused was only about one millimeter, the Caltech team is now able to reach two and a half millimeters. And, in principle, their technique could focus light as much as a few inches into tissue. The technique is used much like a flashlight shining on the body's interior, and may eventually provide researchers and doctors with a host of possible biomedical applications, such as a less invasive way of diagnosing and treating diseases.

If you crank up the power of light, you might even be able to do away with a traditional scalpel. "It enables the possibilities of doing incision-less surgery," says Changhuei Yang, a professor of electrical engineering and bioengineering at Caltech and a senior author on the new study. "By generating a tight laser-focus spot deep in tissue, we can potentially use that as a laser scalpel that leaves the skin unharmed."

Ying Min Wang, a graduate student in electrical engineering, and Benjamin Judkewitz, a postdoctoral scholar, are the lead authors on the paper, which was published in the June 26 issue of the journal Nature Communications.

The new work builds on a previous technique that Yang and his colleagues developed to see through a layer of biological tissue, which is opaque because it scatters light. In the previous work, the researchers shined light through the tissue and then recorded the resulting scattered light on a holographic plate. The recording contained all the information about how the light beam scattered, zigzagging through the tissue. By playing the recording in reverse, the researchers were able to essentially send the light back through to the other side of the tissue, retracing its path to the original source. In this way, they could send light through a layer of tissue without the blurring effect of scattering.

But to make images of what is inside tissue?to get a picture of cells or molecules that are embedded inside, say, a muscle?the researchers would have to be able to focus a light beam into the tissue. "For biologists, it's most important to know what's happening inside the tissue," Wang says.

To focus light into tissue, the researchers expanded on the recent work of Lihong Wang's group at Washington University in St. Louis (WUSTL); they had developed a method to focus light using the high-frequency vibrations of ultrasound. The WUSTL group took advantage of two properties of ultrasound. First, the high-frequency sound waves are not scattered by tissue, which is why it is great for taking images of fetuses in utero. Second, ultrasonic vibrations interact with light in such a way that they shift the light's frequency ever so slightly. As a result of this so-called acousto-optic effect, any light that has interacted with ultrasound changes into a slightly different color.

In both the WUSTL and Caltech experiments, the teams focused ultrasound waves into a small region inside a tissue sample. They then shined light into the sample, which, in turn, scattered the light. Because of the acousto-optic effect, any of the scattered light that passes through the region with the focused ultrasound will change to a slightly different color. The researchers can pick out this color-shifted light and record it. By employing the same playback technique as in the earlier Caltech work, they then send the light back, having only the color-shifted bits retrace their path to the small region where the ultrasound was focused?which means that the light itself is focused on that area, allowing an image to be created. The researchers can control where they want to focus the light simply by moving the ultrasound focus.

The WUSTL experiment was limited, however, because only a very small amount of light could be focused. The Caltech engineers' new method, on the other hand, allows them to fire a beam of light with as much power as they want?which is essential for potential applications.

The team demonstrated how the new method could be used with fluorescence imaging?a powerful technique used in a wide range of biological and biomedical research. The researchers embedded a patch of gel with a fluorescent pattern that spelled out "CIT" inside a tissue sample. Then, they scanned the sample with focused light beams. The focused light hit and excited the fluorescent pattern, resulting in the glowing letters "CIT" emanating from inside the tissue. The team also demonstrated their technique by taking images of tumors tagged with fluorescent dyes.

"This demonstration that we can focus significant optical power deep within tissues opens up significant possibilities in optical imaging," Yang says. By tagging cells or molecules that are markers for disease with fluorescent dyes, doctors can use this technique to make diagnoses noninvasively, much as if they were doing an ultrasound procedure.

Doctors might also use this process to treat cancer with photodynamic therapy. In this procedure, a drug that contains light-sensitive, cancer-killing compounds is injected into a patient. Cancer cells absorb those compounds preferentially, so that the compounds kill the cells when light shines on them. Photodynamic therapy is now only used at tissue surfaces, because of the way light is easily scattered. The new technique should allow doctors to reach cancer cells deeper inside tissue.

The team has been able to more than double the current limit for how far light can be focused into tissue. With future improvements on the optoelectronic hardware used to record and play back light, the engineers say, they may be able to reach 10 centimeters (almost 4 inches)?the depth limit of ultrasound?within a few years.

Still, the researchers say, their demonstration shows they have overcome the main conceptual hurdle for effectively focusing light deep inside tissue. "This is a big breakthrough, and we're excited about the potential," Judkewitz says. Adds Caltech's Wang, "It's a very new way to image into tissue, which could lead to a lot of promising applications."

Several Ideas On Online Marketing | Internet Marketing Strategies

Promoting your online business on the web is essential in today?s globe. The business owner who ignores this particular gold my own of possible opportunity will so at his / her own danger. There is an excessive amount of to end up being gained through making money online, and little to become lost. If a person company is online to start with, this is really a no-brainer, of program. But points are quickly changing on the internet, and individuals marketing methods that worked a couple of years ago might not work too today. Here really are a few steps you can take to expose your company to potential new clients that function today, but might not in a couple of years.

SEO. Search motor optimization. For the web entrepreneur who desires their website to become a success, this is the initial step toward making certain success. Unless you?ve unlimited money with which to market your item, this is really a step you can?t afford in order to skip. Optimizing your site is the same as building your own brick-and-mortar store inside a major buying district instead of halfway lower a grime road by having an old rustic sign pointing within the other path. Its importance can?t be overstated. There tend to be many aspects to SEARCH ENGINE OPTIMIZATION, and insufficient room in the following paragraphs to enter them. Fortunately, few topics happen to be as exhaustively discussed. Do the Google search of your, and you will discover plenty to see.

Pay For each Click. This is actually another fine method to get your online business away and operating. This service emerges by Search engines, Yahoo!, and WINDOWS LIVE MESSENGER, to name several. With Search engines AdWords, you?re going to achieve the most possible traffic, but you may even have probably the most competition for top keywords. What will this imply? Well, AdWords (and also the others) function by allowing you to create a good advertisement (generally a heading and a few sentences). You after that must pick the keywords which will activate your own ad. Then a person place the bid how much you?re prepared to ppc of your own ad, depending upon each key phrase. It just about all sounds much more confusing than it?s. The advantage of this kind of advertising (instead of, say, banner marketing), is you simply pay if you have been ensured of the visitor. Of program, what you need to do with which visitor is your decision and your personal marketing abilities.

Articles and backlinks. Next in order to SEO, this may be the most powerful portion of strategy for that rising internet business proprietor. In order to maneuver up within the search engine rank, you should have incoming hyperlinks (back links, as they?re called within the SEO globe). When the various search engines see an internet site with lots of natural backlinks, they start to see the website being an authority upon whatever subject the website is regarding. Thus, the site?s position begins to enhance. There tend to be many methods to go regarding getting back links, but among the best ways is actually through writing and submitting articles. There tend to be article ?farms? on the web, which web host your articles free of charge and after that sell all of them or present them to other site owners, who tend to be hungry with regard to content. This advantages you because at the conclusion of the content you?ll have included your own name along with a link aimed at your website. Every period someone holds your article to place on their own website, you obtain another essential link.

There really are a million successful techniques for making money online, but they are the three foundations. Go as well as research all of them, and your company would be the better for this.

Presti: Jackson, Van Gundy rumors are 'rubbish'

(AP) ? General manager Sam Presti dismissed reports that 11-time NBA champion Phil Jackson or former New York Knicks coach Jeff Van Gundy could be the next coach of the Oklahoma City Thunder, saying an extension with Scott Brooks is a top priority.

"To me, it's rubbish," Presti said Sunday when asked about an ESPN report that Jackson and Van Gundy were being considered as options if Brooks couldn't be re-signed.

Brooks led Oklahoma City to the NBA Finals last season, but his current contract runs out at the end of the month. He has overseen a steady development since taking over the Thunder early in the 2008-09 season.

After winning 23 games that first season, Brooks took Oklahoma City to the playoffs in 2010, then to the Western Conference finals in 2011 before this season's five-game loss to the Miami Heat in the finals.

Jackson is retired but has left the door open to returning in the right circumstances. Van Gundy is now a commentator for ESPN and ABC.

"Scotty is an integral part of our organization and critical to our success," Presti said. "We value him greatly and we're looking forward to having those (contract) conversations, as he said, in the coming days.

"He's been integral to our success. We wouldn't be the situation that we're in without him and his commitment to our organization and our players."

While Presti put Brooks' contract negotiations at the top of his list, it's an expansive list of issues to tackle after coming within three wins of a championship.

Sixth Man of the Year James Harden, NBA blocks leader Serge Ibaka and backup point guard Eric Maynor are eligible for contract extensions this July, although all are already signed for next season. Veteran contributors Derek Fisher and Nazr Mohammed are set to become unrestricted free agents, along with reserve Royal Ivey.

That's a lot of pieces to try and fit into a financial puzzle that already includes the high-dollar, long-term contracts of All-Stars Kevin Durant and Russell Westbrook.

"We've got to be able to build a team that can win year in and year out, and those are the challenges that have to be balanced," Presti said. "We love the group we have and we're going to work tirelessly to see if we can make it work here but we understand that there are some inherent challenges and that's part of the new (collective bargaining) system."

Presti wouldn't say if the franchise was open to exceeding the salary cap and paying the league's luxury tax in order to keep the roster together.

"What I can tell you is that we're going to do everything we can to make it work. We're going to put everything toward it," Presti said.

Each of the players facing contract decisions expressed an interest in returning to the Thunder. A day earlier, Maynor openly discussed the potential that the players would need to "sacrifice" to make it work. Harden said he loved playing for Oklahoma City and suggested the possibility of a dynasty being built by the Thunder.

"Those guys obviously care a lot about the organization, they care a lot about playing here and, I think, very much about winning. But at the end of the day, those are personal decisions," Presti said.

"We're not ones to judge anyone in those respects. We're going to do what we can to try to make it work for them and to make it work for us."

Since relocating from Seattle in 2008, the Thunder have largely been able to grow with young talent playing on less expensive rookie contracts. As the team has grown older and more successful, the cost of doing business has grown.

"The challenges of that, quite frankly, are the challenges you have when you're a good team," Presti said, "and the decisions that you have to make, especially under a new system, as we try to learn that system and understand it and ultimately make some decisions about what we feel like is the best way to build a team in Oklahoma City that's capable of competing year in and year out and giving ourselves a chance to win both in the in short and long term."

PM indicates cabinet reshuffle, returns from Brazil, Mexico

Indian Prime Minister Manmohan Singh returned in New Delhi on Saturday after a visit to Brazil and Mexico.

Manmohan Singh had attended the Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro prior to which he attended the G20 Summit at Los Cabos in Mexico.

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has indicated a cabinet reshuffle but declined any comment on its timing, or who will replace Pranab Mukherjee as finance minister.

"I think that's a legitimate expectation," he told the accompanying media delegation to the G20 and Rio+20 summits to Mexico and Brazil, on his way back to New Delhi Saturday when asked he wished to reshuffle his cabinet.

"You will get to know about it when it takes place," he added, when also queried if more parties were set to formally join the United Progressive Alliance in the near future.

The prime minister said he has been thinking about who will take over the finance portfolio from Mukherjee, now that he is expected to shift from the North Block to Rashtrapati Bhavan.

"I have been churning it in my mind," the prime minister said.

"Quite honestly I have a number of issues which I have to resolve. It will not be proper for me to announce while I am outside the country. When the decision is taken, you will get to know about it."

PM assures growth, reforms, stable rupee:

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh has sought to assure investors of every step, including reforms, to restore confidence on India while also hoping for higher growth, lower inflation and correction in the depreciating rupee.

"We need foreign investment - both portfolio and direct investment," the prime minister told reporters on his way back from G20 and Rio+20 summits in Mexico and Brazil, when asked about the ratings downgrade of India.

"If there are any obstacles which come in the way, and if there are any policy impediments, we will address them effectively and credibly," the prime minister added when also asked about the perception of policy paralysis in India.

Manmohan Singh, who has been away to these two summits since Saturday last, said he owed it to the country to take all the necessary decisions that would return the economy to a high growth path.

"There are problems with regard to the fiscal management. We will tackle that problem effectively and credibly. There are problems with regard to management of the balance of payments deficit on the current account. Those problems also we will tackle."

"It will not be proper for me to talk about these things in detail," he said when asked about specific measures, but said people wanted growth momentum restored and that he will not disappoint them.

The prime minister also felt that there was no sign of any serious threat to the Indian economy even as he felt the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) was competent to act on interest rates, inflation and the value of the rupee.

"There is no stagflation. There is a slowing down. I am still confident that we can ensure that the growth rate of the economy in the rest of the year will improve to about 7 percent per annum," he said.

"As far as rupee is concerned we operate in a system that is a market based exchange rate. We intervene only to curb violent fluctuations. I am confident that measures that I outlined will return rupee also to a more stable path."

The prime minister, who looked relaxed and at ease during the 25-minute media interaction, was also candid enough to maintain there were issues that needed immediate attention, but assured action.

"A lot of things that are not going right they have their origins outside India. The 2008 financial crisis affected our growth. Our growth rate fell from 9 percent to 6.7 percent," he sasid.

"But then came the Eurozone crisis and therefore there is a flight of capital from large number of developing countries," he said, adding the money was going to Germany and the US for want of safety.

"Therefore all developing countries, including China, are experiencing a deceleration of growth rates. Having said that let me say that there have been problems in our own country. We have to work harder than ever before in restoring fiscal balance," he said.

"We have to work systematically to ensure that the balance of payment problem is managed properly and the climate for foreign investment, both direct and portfolio is also favourably motivated."

While expressing confidence on the Indian economy, he also appealed to all political parties to come forward in pushing forward measures that will restore global investor confidence.

"I am still confident when it comes to dealing with basic fundamental problems of our country, all political parties will join hands, whether it is the Trinamol Congress or other parties. I expect each one of them to play their role in moving this country back to the high growth path that we are capable of."

PM congratulates new Pakistan PM:

Prime Minister Manmohan Singh Saturday congratulated Raja Parvez Ashraf on his appointment as Pakistan's new prime minister and voiced confidence that New Delhi and Islamabad will continue to make progress in their bilateral issues and strengthen cooperation during his tenure.

"I am confident that during your term as Prime Minister, our two countries will continue to make progress in their bilateral dialogue on all issues and build good neighbourly relations by strengthening their cooperation in all areas for the benefit of the people," Manmohan Singh said in a message to the Pakistan prime minister.

"I would like to extend to you my heartiest congratulations on your appointment as Prime Minister of the Islamic Republic of Pakistan," said Manmohan Singh.

"On behalf of the people and Government of India and alsoon my own behalf, I convey to you our best wishes for success in your new assignment as well as for the peace, prosperity and well-being of the people of Pakistan under your leadership," he said.

Ashraf of the ruling Pakistan Peoples Party (PPP), a former federal minister in the government of ousted prime minister Yousuf Raza Gilani, was Friday elected the country's 25th prime minister by 211 votes to 89 by a special session of the National Assembly, the lower house of parliament.

Ashraf, a former minister for water and power, and information and technology, was administered the oath of office by President Asif Ali Zardari Friday night.

The prime minister's post became vacant after the Supreme Court disqualified Gilani with effect from April 26 after his conviction for contempt of court for refusing to write to the Swiss authorities to reopen corruption case against President Zardari.

Yankees won't play chicken with Mets' Francisco

By HOWIE RUMBERG

AP Sports Writer

Associated Press Sports

updated 7:14 p.m. ET June 22, 2012

NEW YORK (AP) - Derek Jeter looked at the front page of a tabloid, the one that had a composite photo of his smiling face atop a chicken's body and the headline "Cluck You!"

He just shook his head.

"What happened?" Jeter asked.

What happened was that Mets closer Frank Francisco told the New York Post this week, "I can't wait to face those chickens" before his team hosted the crosstown rival Yankees in a three-game series starting Friday night at Citi Field.

Jeter and his teammates were more confused by the comment than upset by it.

"I can't be insulted by something I don't understand," Jeter said.

With a big grin, teammate Nick Swisher added: "I don't even know what it means. ... I don't even know what to say."

Alex Rodriguez wanted to know what kind of chicken: "I like mine grilled."

Francisco did not chicken out Friday afternoon, explaining what he meant by his odd comment. He said he thinks the Yankees often protest the umpires' calls.

"I (made) a simple comment because they complain a lot for everything," Francisco said.

In his first season with the Mets, the closer did not pitch when the Yankees swept the Subway Series in the Bronx from June 8-10. But he told the Post he is excited to have a chance to strike out the side in the final series of the regular season between the teams.

Francisco has done it before, whiffing Jeter, Rodriguez and Jason Giambi in the seventh inning on May, 21, 2004, for the Texas Rangers.

Yankees catcher Russell Martin, who hit a game-ending homer off Mets reliever Jon Rauch on June 10, dismissed the comments.

"We'll see if we're chicken when he gets in the game," Martin said.

Never has chicken played so prominent a role in a Yankees story line since the fake George Steinbrenner agreed to trade George Costanza to Tyler Chicken for a fermented chicken drink and other poultry products on an episode of "Seinfeld."

On Friday, Yankees manager Joe Girardi said three chicken companies inquired about sponsoring the Subway Series this weekend.

Mets manager Terry Collins isn't about to start disciplining his players for speaking their minds.

"I'm not going to hang out in the clubhouse and watch what guys say," Collins said. "We're grown men. Frank, if that's the way he feels - I don't think he meant to stir the pot when we played these guys. They're good enough already. It is what it is."

Girardi doesn't think his team needs extra motivation.

"It doesn't really mean anything," Girardi said. "What means something is what you do on the field."

Small Business Ideas For The Enterprising Individual | Small ...

Small Business Ideas For The Enterprising IndividualWith the global economy in transition, opportunities abound for folks looking to go into business for themselves. Of course, the small business failure rate is always high and has been exceedingly so for the past few years as consumers and potential client businesses watch their expenses carefully, excising impulse buys and deferring large purchases until their confidence returns. In such an environment, why not adopt small business ideas that offer high potential payoff for relatively low risk? Owning and operating a proven franchise business is one such idea.

Many different kinds of franchises are available to the enterprising small business owner. The quick-service restaurant industry, for example, is dominated by successful franchise businesses. Whether it's burrito joints like Chipotle and Panchero's, upscale soup-and-sandwich outfits like Panera Bread and Zoup!, or guilty indulgences like Coldstone Creamery and Mrs. Field's Cookies, in-and-out restaurants are a relatively inexpensive starter franchise that provides plenty of ownership experience and room for growth. Simple small business ideas like these provide owners with management and ownership experience as well as serious room for growth.

Restaurants are fast and easy to set up, but there are other small business ideas out there as well. Folks looking for a fulfilling source of business income need look no further than the many childcare and educational franchise opportunities currently available. Many different franchise businesses exist in this space, from more educationally-focused childcare concepts like Goddard Systems Inc. and Tutor Time LLC to concepts that focus on supervised playtime like Adventure Kids Playcare.

Separately, many franchisees make their living running nanny- and babysitter-placement services, which are far cheaper to start up than full-scale preschool concepts. For entrepreneurs just starting out on the road to financial freedom, these cheaper small business ideas may be the way to go.

While it's true that starting any business requires a significant upfront investment, some small business ideas are more likely to pay off than others--especially when they involve a proven franchise concept. The actual investment required of a potential concept owner depends on many factors including the franchise's success rate, its average per-store revenue and profit figures, the cost of setting up the business's physical location, and the geographical location in which the business operates.

Proven franchises like McDonald's and Taco Bell require a larger upfront payment from potential franchisees on account of their stellar reputations and low rates of failure. As with any investment, interested parties buying the rights to a coveted franchise name must pay a premium for the security offered by the name. While smaller or newer franchise concepts are not poor small business ideas, concepts just beginning to gain traction may not be able to offer the corporate-level support or troubleshooting that more-established businesses can. Thus, potential small business owners looking to get in to a new concept on the ground floor should expect to do more of their own legwork. Regardless of the franchisee's ultimate choice of concept, it's small business ideas like these that will drive the nation's economic recovery.

Lack Of Health Insurance Killed More Than 26000 In 2010: Report ...

Not having health insurance could put your life at risk. Or it might not make any difference at all.

A new study has calculated that more than 26,000 Americans died prematurely in 2010 as a direct result of not having health insurance. The study, published on Wednesday by health care advocacy group Families USA, has raised old questions about whether health insurance coverage has any bearing on a person?s odds of living longer.

Families USA?s key finding ? 26,100 premature deaths a year for those 25 to 64 ? is a figure most would find sobering. This works out to about one death every 20 minutes. But it?s a conclusion that some researchers might have difficulty accepting, since its methodology is similar to that used in an earlier report with a troubled history.

What is certain is that the Families USA report arrives at a loaded moment, with the Supreme Court preparing to issue a judgment on the constitutionality of the Affordable Care Act, the 2010 health care overhaul designed to provide coverage to some 30 million Americans who lack it.

Ron Pollack, executive director of Families USA, said the availability of care is ?not a trivial matter? for the roughly 50 million Americans without health insurance.

?When people are uninsured, what they often do is defer care,? Pollack told reporters on a Wednesday conference call. ?Some people pay the ultimate price when they don?t get that care or don?t get it in a timely manner.?

The Supreme Court is expected to rule on the Affordable Care Act by June 28.

Pollack told reporters that he and his organization ?have great confidence? in the study?s conclusions, which indicate that the premature mortality rate among the uninsured grew slightly higher almost every year from 2005 to 2010.

Yet those findings are based on a methodology used in another study from a decade ago that has met with some skepticism in the research community.

The earlier study, published in 2002 by the Institute of Medicine, claimed to find that 18,000 Americans had died in 2000 as a result of having no health insurance.

The findings were widely repeated and even amplified in 2008, when Stan Dorn, a research associate at the Urban Institute, published follow-up research claiming that by 2006 the number of Americans dying as a result of not having insurance had climbed to 22,000 a year.

But there were also dissenting voices. Richard Kronick, then a professor in the Department of Family and Preventive Medicine at the University of California, San Diego School of Medicine, argued in a 2009 paper that the Institute of Medicine report had failed to correct for certain health-related variables, like smoking and body mass index.

Kronick argued that when these and other health factors were taken into account, no significant difference could be found between people who have insurance and those who don?t.

?The answer suggested by the evidence presented here is that there would not be much change in the number of deaths in the U.S. as a result of universal coverage,? he wrote ? an assertion that a number of policy analysts, of various ideological stripes, said they agreed with, according to the Tampa Bay Times? PolitiFact.

During the call on Wednesday, Pollack defended Families USA?s use of the Institute of Medicine methodology.

The institute is ?probably as prestigious and highly respected as any scientific body,? said Pollack in response to a question from The Huffington Post. If anything, ?most of the criticism? of the 2002 study has accused the institute?s researchers of being ?conservative? rather than inflating the data, he said.

Later, Kim Bailey, research director at Families USA and lead author of the new report, told HuffPost that while ?there are always studies that contradict each other,? the organization considered the Institute of Medicine research to be an ?incredibly rigorous? treatment of available data.

?They?re not actually doing original research of their own ? what they?re doing is aggregating the research that exists,? said Bailey about the institute. But ?a huge prevalence of data? shows ?an overwhelmingly strong link between uninsurance and premature mortality,? she said.

U.S. seizes Tyrannosaurus bones on suspicion of smuggling

NEW YORK | Fri Jun 22, 2012 5:38pm EDT

NEW YORK (Reuters) - U.S. officials on Friday seized the skeleton of a Tyrannosaurus dinosaur that Mongolia wants returned on suspicion that it was smuggled to the United States from the Gobi desert.

The bones of the tyrannosaurus bataar, an eight-foot-tall, 24-foot-long cousin of the Tyrannosaurus rex, were taken in a moving van from the Cadogan Tate Fine Art storage company in Queens, where they had been stored in four large wooden crates.

The President of Mongolia, Elbegdorj Tsakhia, demanded that the skeleton be returned to his country after it was auctioned on May 20 for $1.05 million by Dallas-based Heritage Auctions.

The buyer of the skeleton was never disclosed. But the man who acquired the skeleton and offered it to Heritage for auction, said he has been unfairly labeled as a smuggler.

"I'm just a guy in Gainesville, Florida trying to support my family, not some international bone smuggler," commercial paleontologist Eric Prokopi said in a statement.

"It's been claimed that I misrepresented what was being imported and did not properly declare its value. I can wholeheartedly say the import documents are not fraudulent," Prokopi said in the statement issued through Heritage.

A U.S. government lawsuit filed on Tuesday on behalf of Mongolia said the customs forms filed when the skeleton was imported incorrectly stated the country of origin was Great Britain, its value was $15,000 instead of $1 million it sold for, and mentioned only reptiles not dinosaurs.

Prokopi did not say in his statement where or from whom he acquired the skeleton. He said that when he received the tyrannosaurus bataar, it was a collection of loose, mostly broken bones and rocks with embedded bones. Prokopi said he and his wife spent thousands of hours preparing and mounting the skeleton, which increased its value, before it was auctioned.

On Monday, U.S. Attorney Preet Bharara filed a lawsuit seeking the forfeiture of the skeleton to the Mongolian government. An order to seize the fossil was issued on Tuesday.

Robert Painter, the lawyer representing Mongolia, said that the dinosaur will be held by the U.S. government while legal proceedings on its future continue.

Anyone who comes forward to claim ownership of the skeleton will have to prove they are the rightful owner or the U.S. will repatriate the skeleton to Mongolia.

"Today we send a message to looters all over the world: We will not turn a blind eye to the marketplace of looted fossils," Mongolian President Tsakhia said in a statement.

The skeleton was discovered in 1946 during a joint Soviet-Mongolian expedition to the Gobi Desert, Bharara said.

Heritage Auctions and the Mongolian government agreed in May to jointly investigate the ownership of the skeleton. Several paleontologists examined the bones and determined they were removed from the western Gobi Desert between 1995 and 2005.

Twitter goes down, productivity skyrockets

11 hrs.

Updated 5:31?p.m. ET to reflect the end of the outage

You've probably already noticed, but Twitter went down for a while today. In theory, this means that productivity should have?skyrocketed around the world???as soon as we all stopped frantically trying to refresh our Twitter feeds.

We don't know much about the outage, but Twitter did add a message to its official status page, pointing out that "users may be experiencing issues accessing" the social networking service when things came crashing down. Some users were seemingly?able to access Twitter through mobile.twitter.com?throughout the outage, though.

By late Thursday afternoon, Twitter issued this update via its @twittercomms account: "Today's outage is due to a cascaded bug in one of our infrastructure components. We'll provide updated information soon."?A cascaded bug has an effect that isn't confined to a particular software element; its effect "cascades" into other elements as well.

In the aftermath of this social media tragedy, I offer my sympathies to anyone who is suffered Twitter withdrawal symptoms like I am and invite him or her to seek comfort on my or on msnbc.com tech's Facebook pages.

Want more tech news, silly puns, or amusing links? You'll get plenty of all three if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

Dell Inspiron 14z-5423

The Dell Inspiron 14z-5423 ($899 direct) brings third-generation Intel Core procressor, discrete AMD Radeon 3D graphics, and an ultrabook form factor to the sub-$1,000 laptop buyer. For an ultrabook, the system is fast and has very good 3D graphics capabilities , but on the whole the system is a little heavy and has less than stellar battery life. It's a decent choice for the user who values multimedia and 3D performance over battery performance, but overall it comes up short of our class leaders. At $899, it's more expensive than other ultrabooks, but what you're apying for is the extra 3D and multimedia performance. This is a safe, middle-of-the-road choice, and definitely a good choice for back to school, but ultimately other ultrabooks are more distinctive.

Design and Features
The Inspiron 14z looks very much the part of a new ultrabook, with its "Moon Silver" coloring on the main chassis and lighter silver ring surrounding the system. (The "Fire Red" colored panels will be available later this year.) The system comes with a full-sized, island-style keyboard, which has a decent typing feel. The keys have a slight indent, and the arrow keys in the lower right hand corner have contrasting feel. The up/down keys are convex and the left/right keys are concave, so you should be able to use them while touch-typing. The system has three backlit quick launch keys between the keyboard and the hinge, which gives you quick access to system settings, audio settings, and a quick launch app of your choosing. The touchpad is multi-touch with separate left and right mouse buttons in case you don't like using tap to click.

The system's 14-inch panel has a resolution of 1,366 by 768, which is good enough for 720p HD video (1080p HD will have to be scaled down). The ultrabook weighs just over four pounds (we measured 4.08 pounds without the power adapter), so it's fairly easy to tote around. That said, the class leading ultrabooks are almost a pound lighter. It's notable that the system has a built-in tray-loading DVD burner, which you likely wouldn't get in a 13-inch or smaller ultrabook, subnotebook, or sleekbook.

The system comes with two USB 3.0 ports, one exposed on the right, and one on the left hidden under a drop-down panel. The system's HDMI port is under the same panel, plus a full-size Ethernet port under door next to the HDMI port. The left-hand side USB 3.0 port is a PowerShare port, which can charge an external device (like a smartphone) while the lid is closed and the system is off or asleep. A 3-in-1 memory card reader and Kensington lock port round out the external connectors.

The Inspiron 14z comes with a 720p HD webcam and pre-loaded Skype for video conferencing. Audio is a highlight, with Waves MaxxAudio 4.0 processing and Skullcandy branded speakers. An updated version of Dell Stage greets you upon launch, and you can use the Dell Stage launcher to get into your multimedia.

Storage isn't too much of a concern. The Inspiron 14z comes with a 500GB hard drive with a 32GB mSATA cache drive for speed. The system was quick to sleep and wake, as per the ultrabook specifications. There is a bit of extra software and services accessible thought Dell Stage, including Facebook, Flickr, Shutterfly, CinemaNow, Hulu, Napster, RadioTime, Noisey, Blio, and the Cozi family calendar. The Inspiron 14z comes with Intel WiDi software pre-loaded , though you will have to use your own WiDi monitor or adapter. There are a few shortcut icons on the desktop, including eBay, My Identity Protection, and Play Games (Wild Tangent games). On the whole not too bad, but bloatware does make its presence known.

Performance
Dell Inspiron 14z-5423 The Inspiron 14z-5423 has a 3rd-Generation Intel Core i5-3317U dual-core processor with Hyper-Threading. That processor in combination of a 1GB AMD Radeon HD 7570M discrete GPU means that, for the most part, the 14z-5423 leads the ultrabook category in performance. Thanks to the GPU, the Inspiron 14z returned almost playable scores in Crysis at medium quality (41 frames per second), and a decent score at Lost Planet 2 (21 fps). Likewise, the 14z-5423 rated high scores on 3DMark 06 tests at both resolutions. The 14z-5423 will be fine for playing light- to medium-duty 3D games, and most certainly will be able to play games like World of Warcraft smoothly.

Dell Inspiron 14z-5423

Its Intel Core i5-3317U processor helped the 14z-5423 gain speedy performance at the multimedia tests like Handbrake (1 minute 58 seconds) and Photoshop CS5 (4:35). The Editors' Choice for ultrabooks, the HP Folio 13-1020us ($899.99 list, 4 stars) trailed the Inspiron 14z at all of the multimedia tests (which scored 2:29 in Handbrake, 5:24 in CS5), as does the 2nd-generation Intel Core powered Dell XPS 13 ($999.99 direct, 4 stars) (which scored 2:40 in Handbrake, 5:23 in CS5).

The one test in which the Inspiron 14z doesn't shine is one of the most important: battery life. It scored 6:06 at the MobileMark 2007 battery test, a little disappointing. That's almost three hours behind the HP Folio 13-1020us, which received a class-leading 8 hours 47 minutes (its brother, the HP Folio 13-1029wm, got 8:40). Next up is the Toshiba Portege Z835-P370 ($1049.99 list, 4 stars) at 7:21.

Though the Dell Inspiron 14z-5423 has a larger screen than our current EC, the HP Folio 13-1020us (which has a 13.3-inch screen) and somewhat better performance on the multimedia and 3D tests, the fact that the HP 13-1020us is lighter, cheaper, and has almost three hours better battery life lets the latter hold on to its title. Both systems have 1,366 by 768 resolution screens, so all you get is slightly larger letters and images. Those who are 3D junkies are better off with a more powerful system anyway, since the Inspiron 14z gets you to "just barely playable" frame rates rather than "fully playable." Buy the HP Folio 13-1020us if you want all-day battery life from your laptop. But if you want better performance and want to finish a task quicker, take a look at the Inspiron 14z.

peeled garlic,21food - How To Make Pickled Garlic?

An innovative addition to any relish tray, pickled garlic can also be used to spice up many sauces and other recipes. It tastes sweeter than raw or cooked garlic. It's relatively easy to make at home using fresh garlic cloves in good condition. Like other relishes, it can be purchased ready-to-eat from many specialty stores. Pickled garlic comes in jars and can be found in a variety of flavors, such as spicy, mild, and habanero, as well as plain.

For those who are particularly adventurous in the kitchen, pickled garlic can also be made at home. The preparation time is minimal, but the soaking of the garlic lengthens the project. Recipes vary depending on the specific tastes of the cook, but most follow the same basic structure.

The garlic should be peeled before it is pickled. Only clean, fresh cloves of garlic should be used to make pickled garlic. Before beginning the pickling process, a cook should examine each clove and discard any that have brown spots or blemishes, are soft and rotted, or are beginning to grow a sprout in the center.

Next, bring six parts white vinegar and one part white sugar to a boil in a large saucepan. Blanching the unpeeled cloves for 30 seconds to 1 minute makes removing the papery skins easier. As the cloves need to be whole or nearly whole when pickled for aesthetic reasons, a cook shouldn't smash the cloves with a knife to remove the peels. Another way to remove the peels is with a vegetable peeler. Other ingredients, such as dill, celery seed, or peppers, can be added during the boiling stage to achieve a different flavor.

Once the mixture has boiled a second time, the cook should take it off the heat and let it sit for a day at room temperature. When the vinegar and peeled garlic mixture has rested for a day, the cook should then pour it into a clean glass jar, cover it with a lid, and store in the refrigerator. Once the jars have been filled, seal them and store them in the refrigerator. In approximately three weeks, you will have your own home-made pickled garlic.

Pickled garlic is not only a delicious treat for garlic lovers. Today, garlic has been proven to contribute to cardiovascular health and to boost the immune system. Historically, garlic has been used to treat arthritis, freckles, and cancer. Like fresh garlic, pickled garlic also has a variety of health benefits.

Man-Made Earthquakes Get Geologists' Attention

Geologists have noticed an increase in the number of small earthquakes in the U.S. They suspect the cause to be wastewater wells, where polluted water from industrial processes is pumped deep underground. None of the quakes has caused serious damage.

RENEE MONTAGNE, HOST:

Geologists have noticed a remarkable increase in the number of small earthquakes in the U.S. They suspect the cause to be waste water wells. That's where polluted water from industrial processes is pumped deep underground. Now, none of the quakes have caused serious damage. But as NPR's Christopher Joyce reports, the seismic spike casts doubt on plans to bury underground all sorts of unwanted stuff.

CHRISTOPHER JOYCE, BYLINE: They're called induced earthquakes, man-made. They used to be rare. Pretty much only geologists paid attention to them. They suspected that waste water wells were one cause. Geologist Bill Ellsworth is with the U.S. Geological Survey.

BILL ELLSWORTH: Any time we're perturbing the state of stress underground, that has the possibility of causing earthquakes.

JOYCE: Underground rocks are filled with cracks - fault-lines. If you pump water near one, it's like lubricating a sliding door that's stuck. The rocks are going to slip more easily.

Now there's a new study by the National Research Council in Washington, D.C. that confirms that waste wells are causing quakes and that the oil and gas boom right now has a lot to do with that. They use lots of water to get at oil and gas underground.

MURRAY HITZMAN: So there's just more types of water to dispose of.

JOYCE: That's geologist Murray Hitzman of the Colorado School of Mines. He ran the NRC study. He says expect more quakes.

HITZMAN: We're going to cause more events as we drill more wells. I think there's not much question about that. But we understand what's happening pretty well and I think we can get in place, without too much problem, protocols and systems so that we can deal with it in a very reasonable way.

JOYCE: Such as taking a much closer look at where natural faults are underground before drilling a waste well. But it's more than water that people want to bury. Carbon dioxide, for example. Why CO2? Well, it's the main climate-warming gas, mostly from coal-fired power plants. The federal government is spending millions figuring out how to keep it out of the air, like burying it. But geologist Mark Zoback and his colleagues at Stanford University say let's not rush into this.

MARK ZOBACK: The real problem is the scale. You're talking about injecting a volume of fluid, oh, on the order of about 27 billion barrels a year.

JOYCE: Once injected, the CO2 acts like a fluid, lubricating the fault. And 27 billion barrels dwarfs the amount of waste water the oil and gas industry is producing.

ZOBACK: So it's an extremely large, costly, and we believe high risk endeavor.

JOYCE: Writing in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences, Zoback says even a small quake could release the CO2 back into the atmosphere, where it would contribute to global warming.

ZOBACK: A leak need not threaten the public, but a leak would, you know, obviate the whole purpose of the endeavor. And you know, we're talking about spending literally trillions of dollars over, say, half a century to do this.

JOYCE: Zoback and Hitzman took their concerns to Congress, which is weighing new laws to develop so-called carbon capture and storage underground. Democratic Senator Jeff Bingaman of New Mexico was encouraged by the NRC report, which suggests that geologists should be able to avoid quake-prone areas. Hitzman wasn't so sure.

SENATOR JEFF BINGAMAN: As long as we stay away from the known faults that are naturally there, we pretty much deal with that problem.

HITZMAN: Right, but what happens is there are faults we don't know about. And that's where we've had the problems.

JOYCE: Geological Survey scientists are writing guidelines for locating faults near waste wells. But as for who finds them - well, the USGS says they don't have the money or the staff.
