Oil rise for 5th day ahead of meeting between US Treasury Secretary, Europe finance chiefs

BANGKOK - Oil prices rose for a fifth day ahead of a meeting Monday between the U.S. Treasury Secretary and top European finance officials as expectations remain elevated for ECB action to prevent Spain's financial woes from deepening.

Benchmark crude for September delivery was up 40 cents at $90.52 a barrel at midday Bangkok time in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange. The contract added 74 cents on Friday to finish at $90.13 per barrel in New York.

Brent crude was up 26 cents at $106.73 on the ICE futures exchange in London.

Oil has climbed after last week's vow from European Central Bank chief Mario Draghi to do whatever it takes to keep the euro common currency intact. Similar remarks from the leaders of France and Germany have created a chorus of support for the beleaguered euro, which was facing a new challenge to its existence as a surge in Spain's borrowing costs raised the prospect that one of Europe's biggest economies could ask for a bailout.

U.S. Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner meets Monday with Draghi and Germany's finance minister to discuss the huge challenges facing Europe and the global economy. They are expected to issue a statement after their meeting which comes amid high expectations that both the ECB and the U.S. Federal Reserve will soon announce new steps to salvage economic growth.

China, meanwhile, has been stepping up efforts to counter its slowdown, allowing cities to announce big infrastructure spending plans that would boost construction and also have the side effect of increasing demand for oil and other fuels.

In other energy trading, gasoline was up 1.6 cents at $2.813 a gallon and heating oil was almost unchanged at $2.89 a gallon. Natural gas rose 4.4 cents to $3.059 per 1,000 cubic feet.

Focus on the Family Community: Relationships and Marriage: How ...

I posted two Messages before a couple of months ago while going through a difficult trial relating to my marriage.? I was newly married and was having issues with my husband steming from him being disconnected from the marriage and him also not practicing what he was preaching on Sunday morning.? My husband allegedly is a pastor but we came from different church backgrounds.? He didnt understand my walk with the lord and I didnt believe he had one at all with the way he was acting in his everyday life.?

?

And this showed in the marriage, he was didnt want to do anything in our marriage no sacrifice no love no relationship no nothing.? And so I began to pray corporately with my church and with a couple of my friends afterwards doing the Daniel fast for god to turn our relationship and him around.? And as I began to pray the lord began to reveal a lot of things to me.? I found out 2 months ago that my husband in fact was having an affair that was happening even before we started dating.? You see the girl is married also so I assume the reason why he married me was because she wasnt available and I was. I called the girl and she confirmed everything to me, and when she apparantly called my husband to tell him I called her he became irate with ME.? Called me and told me our marriage was over because I called her....it was almost like I was the one he was cheating with and not on.

?

This resulted in me putting him out of the house with the help of a sheriff.? So now its been two months, Ive been standing with the lord holding my hand every single second, minute and hour.? And he calls me to tell me he is sorry for everything that has happened, that he made so many mistakes and wants me to forgive him.? He doesnt want a divorce, he wants to work things out..so on and so forth. He is going to change.... I started to file for divorce about a month ago but the spirit of god told me to wait. And so now my thoughts are: what will change between us.? I cant possibly go on to the way things are.? My heart of course melted with forgiveness right away and with a little bit of joy but my reality is and I cant help but question if he is sorry because he lost Everything and now has NOTHING.? Or is he truly sorry, you see remorse is just being sorry whereas true repentence is being totally broken before god.? I dont hear that in him yet, we only have been talking for 1 week now.?

?

So now I am torn because scripture says that god Hates Divorce but it also says that if a person commits adultery you can write a letter of divorce.? I am definitely fighting the spirit with the flesh because the spirit is telling me to let it go meaning let god deal with him and his heart and not to enable him which is for the most part what I am doing but the flesh is telling me to take him back and forget this ever happened.? But there is so much hurt and pain and healing is a process..I definitely cant go back to the way things were but how do I trust he will not be the same.?

?

Should I divorce...I am so confused.....Any help will be helpful.????

You can now 'handwrite' your Google searches

22 hrs.

Google has a knack for coming up with features that you never even realized you need until they exist.

Google Handwrite is one of those features.

As Google software engineer Rui Ueyama explains on the official Google blog,?Handwrite is simply?another way to conduct Web searches from your smartphone or tablet.?It means that you can now?write out search terms with your finger instead of tapping them out the good old-fashioned way. (You can still also search using your voice or an image, of course.)

It sounds like a silly feature at first, but?you'll likely fall in love with it after a couple of tries. I most certainly did.

As someone with handwriting so atrocious that I should be a medical professional, I expected that Handwrite would fail to recognize any query I tried. But instead, it flawlessly transcribed three out of every five words, no matter how long or bizarre they were. I tried to trip the feature up by mixing?cursive and block letters, but no dice?? Handwrite still did pretty well. It even worked like a charm when I wrote with my eyes closed and one of my hands?metaphorically?tied behind my back.

I have a hunch that once one gets used to writing things out on a mobile device's screen, it could become a faster to search than good ol' typing.

To try Handwrite yourself, you'll need?an Apple device running iOS 5 or higher, an Android smartphone running Android 2.3 or higher, or an Android tablet running Android 4.0 or higher. If you've got one of those around, open your browser, go to the Google search page and look for the "Settings" button. There you can enable Handwrite.

Once you've done that, you can just tap the new?Handwrite icon any?time you want to scrawl out?your search query. And don't worry, you can still continue using auto-complete in conjunction with Handwrite. Here's how the two work together:

Want more tech news?or interesting?links? You'll get plenty of both if you keep up with Rosa Golijan, the writer of this post, by following her on?Twitter, subscribing to her?Facebook?posts,?or circling her?on?Google+.

HBT: Cordero hasn't made good impression in Houston

Francisco Cordero went from Toronto to Houston as part of last week?s 10-player swap and the Astros, having traded closer Brett Myers and setup man Brandon Lyon, installed Cordero as their new closer.

To absolutely no one?s surprise, it hasn?t worked out very well.

Cordero was terrible for the Blue Jays, throwing 34 innings with a 5.77 ERA and .340 opponents? batting average, and he?s blown saves (and taken losses) in two of his first three appearances for the Astros.

Tuesday against the Reds he came into the game with a 2-1 lead in the ninth inning and went fly out, single, homer, ground out, walk, wild pitch, walk, single. By the time manager Brad Mills removed Cordero from the game it was a 4-2 deficit.

Last night, also against the Reds, he came into the game with a 3-2 lead in the ninth inning and went double, strikeout, walk, strikeout, double. Mills again removed him from the game before the inning was over, this time with a 4-3 deficit.

So though three games Cordero is 0-2 with two blown saves and a 23.14 ERA while allowing opponents to hit .417 with a 1.367 OPS. And the Astros, who have an MLB-worst 34 wins all season, have let a washed-up 37-year-old closer turn back-to-back ninth-inning leads into back-to-back losses.

U.S. fears Syria preparing for massacre in Aleppo

AMMAN/BEIRUT (Reuters) - President Bashar al-Assad's forces renewed a ground and aerial bombardment of Aleppo on Friday, extending efforts to crush rebels in Syria's commercial capital in what the United States said it feared could become a massacre.

Insurgents targeted army roadblocks and security installations, with both sides avoiding close-quarters warfare in the city of 2.5 million people, Syria's biggest urban centre.

The U.S. State Department said credible reports of tank columns moving on Aleppo, along with air strikes by helicopters and fixed-wing aircraft, represented a serious escalation of Assad's efforts to crush a rebellion that began 16 months ago.

"This is the concern: that we will see a massacre in Aleppo, and that's what the regime appears to be lining up for," State Department spokeswoman Victoria Nuland said.

Troops stationed on the outskirts of Aleppo unleashed barrages of heavy-caliber mortar rounds on the western neighborhoods of Saladin, al-Sukkari and al-Fardos, while Russian MI-25 helicopter gunships struck al-Sakhour in the east with rockets, several opposition activists in the city said.

RISING CASUALTIES

In the first reported casualty on Friday, a man of about 60 wearing a traditional white prayer outfit was killed near a park in Saladin. His body was placed in a mosque pending identification.

Thirty-four people were killed in Aleppo and its environs on Thursday, according to opposition activists keeping a tally of casualties in the northern city.

"The rebels have so far been nimble, and civilians have mostly been the victims of the bombardment," said activist Abu Mohammad al-Halabi, speaking by phone from the city.

"There is lots of internal displacement, and schools have been turned to makeshift shelters that are packed. One shell hitting a school will result in a catastrophe," he said.

"The regime is massing troops and tanks at the entrances of Aleppo, but it seems it is for now content with bombarding the city, with the rebels constantly on the move."

Majed al-Nour, another activist, said rebels attacked a security outpost in the neighborhood of Bustan al-Joz, which is close to the Aleppo city center, on Thursday.

"The rebels are present in the east and west of the city, and have a foothold in areas of the center. The regime forces control the entrances of Aleppo and the main thoroughfares and commercial streets and are bombarding the residential districts that fell into rebel hands," he said.

Nour said tens of thousands of people had fled Aleppo to nearby northern rural regions close to Turkey from which the Syrian army has withdrawn in recent weeks to focus on urban areas where relatively lightly armed rebels have hunkered down.

The heavy fighting around Aleppo follows an audacious bomb attack that killed four of Assad's closest lieutenants in Damascus on July 18 and led some analysts to speculate that the government's grip was slipping.

With U.N. Security Council resolutions for sanctions against Syria vetoed by Russia and China for a third time last week, the United States has said it is stepping up assistance to Syria's fractured opposition, although it remains limited to non-lethal supplies such as communications gear and medical equipment.

Reuters has learned that the White House has crafted a presidential directive, called a "finding," that would authorize greater covert assistance for the rebels, while still stopping short of arming them.

It is not clear whether President Barack Obama has signed the document, and U.S. officials declined to comment on the finding, which is a highly classified authorization for covert activity.

UNITING THE OPPOSITION

A Syrian parliamentarian representing the northern province of Aleppo said on Friday she had defected to Turkey, becoming the first member of the rubberstamp assembly elected in May and dominated by President Bashar al-Assad's Baath Party to defect.

"I have crossed to Turkey and defected from this tyrannical regime ... because of the repression and savage torture against a nation demanding the minimum of rights," Ikhlas al-Badawi told Sky News Arabia.

One of the most senior figures to defect from Assad's inner circle, Brigadier General Manaf Tlas, put himself forward on Thursday as someone who could help unify the opposition inside and outside Syria on a plan for a transfer of power.

Tlas, speaking in a newspaper interview in the Saudi city of Jeddah, also said he was looking for support from Saudi Arabia and other powers. "I am discussing with ... people outside Syria to reach a consensus with those inside," Tlas told Thursday's edition of the Saudi newspaper Asharq al-Awsat.

Tlas went on to Turkey and met with Foreign Minister Ahmet Davutoglu. Turkey, a former ally of Assad and now one of his fiercest critics, has a heavy strategic stake in shaping any post-Assad leadership in neighboring Syria.

Tlas appeared briefly with Davutoglu at an official guest house, but made no statement.

Turkey closed its border posts with Syria on Wednesday to all traffic except Syrian refugees.

Russia, one of the few remaining allies of the authoritarian Assad whose family has run Syria for 42 years, said calls for him to quit power were hindering efforts to end the conflict.

Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said such calls, led by the United States, Turkey and other Western and Arab nations, were fanning violence. He reiterated Moscow's contention that support for Syrian rebel groups was tantamount to backing terrorism.

Iran promised to stand by Syria, come what may.

First Vice President Mohammad Reza Rahimi told Iran's Press TV on Thursday that the Islamic Republic's support for Syria, its main Arab ally, was "unchangeable", countering suggestions that Iran could soften its backing for Assad.

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution

Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (WHOI) researchers have partnered with two companies to build and market undersea technology developed at WHOI: the Imaging FlowCytobot, an automated underwater microscope, and BlueComm, an underwater communications system that uses light to provide wireless transmission of data, including video imagery, in real or near-real time.

WHOI biologists Robert Olson and Heidi Sosik, creators of the Imaging FlowCytobot, have licensed their instrument to Falmouth-based McLane Research Laboratories, which manufactures and sells a wide range of precision oceanographic instruments.

WHOI engineers Norman E. Farr and Jonathan Ware are partnering with U.K.-based underwater acoustics and communications company Sonardyne International Ltd., to create the joint venture, Lumasys.

The Imaging FlowCytobot detects, photographs, and collects data on microscopic plants and animals -- phytoplankton and zooplankton in the ocean, characterizing, measuring, and quantifying their cells in order to identify them. The automated instrument is low-powered and low-maintenance; it gathers information 24 hours a day, for up to six months at a time, and sends it via fiber-optic cable tether back to a surface ship or land-based lab.

Olson says the instrument was borne of frustration. He and Sosik wanted a clearer picture of the types and numbers of plankton living in the ocean, but weren't satisfied with traditional methods of gathering samples every few hours on research ships at sea.

"There was no good instrument to do what we wanted to do," Olson says. So the two began to develop one, starting with a prototype of the Imaging FlowCytobot in 2003.

What Sosik and Olson didn't realize was that the Imaging FlowCytobot would soon show its versatility and potential for applications. In 2007, while collaborating with Texas A&M biological oceanographer Lisa Campell in the Gulf of Mexico, a prototype version of the Imaging FlowCytobot detected high levels of the toxic algae, Dinophysis cf. ovum, an organism that causes diarrhetic shellfish poisoning in humans. They alerted local health officials, who promptly closed shellfish beds and recalled local oysters, clams, and mussels. As a result, no shellfish-related human illnesses were reported, and a local oyster festival went onwith non-contaminated shellfish brought in from elsewhere.

"The idea that we were designing something that had such an immediate impact on human health was really far from our minds," Sosik says. "It's gratifying to find that something we're doing as a basic research endeavor has this quick return."

Using the Imaging FlowCytobot in the Arctic Ocean, scientists recently discovered a huge bloom of phytoplankton under meter-thick ice, where they previously thought sunlight-requiring phytoplankton could not grow.

Yuki Honjo, McLane's chief operating officer, says, "We're excited about the Imaging FlowCytobot because it can answer a wide variety of questions." She foresees uses ranging from coastal rehabilitation to monitoring complex ecosystems in real-time for applied research.

"We're trying to build a fleet of instruments to answer a fleet of questions," she says.

A collaboration among Farr and other engineers at WHOI, BlueComm uses low-power LED transmitters with small, inexpensive receivers to transfer data through water at a rate of 10 to 20 megabits per second up to 200 meters away. It allows scientists to upload large amounts of data and transmit video in near real-time from seafloor sensors and operate robots without "plugging in" to transmission cables.

Before the arrival of BlueComm, scientists used only acoustic communication devices. These can transfer data over larger distances, but at much slower speeds that could not transfer high-bandwidth data such as video in real-time.

Like cell phone and wireless Internet access, BlueComm transfers data wirelessly, making it possible, for example, to control remotely operated vehicles (ROVs) without a tether cable. Farr and his team demonstrated BlueComm's potential in 2010 when they successfully operated ROV Jason at the Juan de Fuca Ridge in the Pacific Ocean and deployed seafloor equipment using video transmitted through the wireless optical system. He and Ware teamed up with Sonardyne in February 2012 to begin preparing BlueComm for the market.

"BlueComm opens new doors and creates a new way of thinking about how to get data from the sea floor," Farr says. "Rather than recovering the BlueComm instrument to offload data, you can 'fly' an ROV close to a 'sleeping' BlueComm sensor package on the seafloor, wake it up, and tell it to transmit all of its data. Or you can suspend an instrument package from a surface vessel with optical communications on it, wake up the sea floor BlueComm unit, download all of the data, and put it back to sleep. This allows for data recovery using smaller ships and for longer sensor deployments."

Shaun Dunn, engineering business development manager for Sonardyne, says, "It was clear to Sonardyne that there was a perfect synergy between our capabilities at long-range acoustic communications coupled with WHOI's ability to communicate optically at extremely high rates over modest ranges. This unique combination unlocks a whole variety of new and exciting applications for subsea wireless communications that would not have been possible otherwise."

Olson, Sosik, Farr, and Ware are not the only WHOI scientists and engineers who've partnered with outside companies to commercialize their instruments. WHOI engineer Hanumant Singh created SeaBED Technologies in 2010 to manufacture and sell autonomous underwater vehicles (AUVs). The SeaBED AUV can fly slowly or hover over the seafloor at depths of 2,000 meters and collect highly detailed sonar and optical images of the seabed. It has been used to assess fisheries and survey marine protected areas. SeaBED Technologies is located in Falmouth, Mass.

Caterpillar shares jump as 2Q profit grows 67 pct

Caterpillar Inc.'s second-quarter profit soared 67 percent because of growing demand for its construction and mining equipment, and the company boosted its outlook for the year.

Caterpillar is the world's largest maker of construction and mining equipment, and its results are watched closely because they are considered an indicator of industrial activity and the health of the overall economy. CEO Doug Oberhelman said Caterpillar is prepared to cut costs if the economy does weaken significantly, but he remains cautiously optimistic, despite widespread fears of a slowing global economy.

"The good news is, this doesn't feel like 2008. Interest rates are low, central banks are prepared to inject more liquidity if needed, and housing is coming off lows, not a peak, and seems to be improving," Oberhelman said.

The Peoria, Ill., company said Wednesday that it generated $1.7 billion in net income, or $2.54 per share, from April through June. That's up from $1.02 billion, or $1.52 per share, a year ago. Revenue increased 22 percent to $17.37 billion from last year's $14.23 billion.

Analysts surveyed by FactSet expected Caterpillar to report earnings per share of $2.28 on $17 billion in revenue.

Caterpillar now expects earnings per share of $9.60 in 2012. That's up from a prediction in April of $9.50 and tops analysts' expectation of $9.54.

But the company tightened its revenue forecast for the year to between $68 billion and $70 billion from a previous prediction of between $68 billion and $72 billion. Analysts expect $69.44 billion.

Shares rose $2.24, or 2.8 percent, to $83.67 in morning trading Wednesday.

Caterpillar's higher quarterly sales volume and prices provided a $2 billion boost, with sales rising in every region worldwide. Last year's acquisitions of mining equipment maker Bucyrus International and engine maker MWM Holding GmbH also provided a $1.37 billion boost to sales during the quarter.

The biggest sales improvement came in North America, where sales grew 31 percent as construction firms upgraded their aging fleets even though construction activity remained slow. Sales in Asia grew 25 percent because increases in Australia and other countries offset a decline in China.

Ariz. city mulls lifting decades-old ban on ice cream trucks

A treat in Boston, a crime in Scottsdale (Ann Hermes/Christian Science Monitor/AP)Ice cream trucks are a welcome addition to thousands of neighborhood streets every summer. But they've been illegal in Scottsdale, Arizona, since the 1970s.

And the Arizona Republic reports that the ban isn't likely to be lifted without a fight, despite a recent proposal that would allow the trucks to return.

An ordinance that would allow ice-cream trucks in Scottsdale neighborhoods was met with mostly criticism during an open house this week. The trucks were originally banned over concerns that vendors were actually selling illegal drugs.

About 15 residents who attended Tuesday's session said they opposed the proposal to lift a decades-old ban on street vendors in Scottsdale.

Under current law, vendors are allowed to operate only on private property or during special events and after obtaining a permit from the city. However, some city residents say they're more worried about public safety.

"It wasn't just the drugs being sold in high schools from the vendors, but it was because of the safety," Sonnie Kirtley, who chairs the Coalition of Greater Scottsdale, said at Tuesday's meeting. "We were talking about the safety of the children running across the street to go to the ice-cream trucks."

And while it's safe to assume that support for the ice-cream trucks is overwhelming among the city's youth, the kids do not actually vote, unlike the 15 adults who showed up to oppose the proposed change.

Mayor Jim Lane has offered the ordinance to help local business entrepreneurs. But his chief-of-staff J.P. Twist told the paper that the proposal is "not a done deal."

"The idea behind this is to figure out a way to be less restrictive than overly restrictive," he said. "We're not trying to step on anybody's toes."

Are Celebrities Making Pregnant Women Unhealthy?

While pregnancy weight gain has always been something for moms-to-be to keep an eye on, with today?s hottest celebrities giving birth and dropping pregnancy weight at breakneck speeds, is it possible we?re becoming too obsessed with the scale?

Research on women with eating disorders who are able to conceive has shed new light on an issue of growing concern ? women who now have unrealistic expectations when it comes to losing weight gained during a pregnancy.

While eating disorders are still quite rare, many healthy women are feeling pressure to gain less during their pregnancies so they can lose the weight faster. With role models (and actual models) such as Miranda Kerr, Beyonce and a host of other actresses who appear to be magically dropping back to their pre-baby sizes within months of giving birth,? the pressure is on for any pregnant woman to get back in shape after baby.

Eating healthy and getting exercise is always recommended during pregnancy, but many moms-to-be are losing track of the importance of actually putting on healthy weight as they carry a baby ? benchmarks set as low as 15 lbs of weight gain for some pregnancies are no longer seen as based on an assessment of prior weight, overall health, etc. but are seen as goals for who can gain the least and lose it quickest.

Improper weight gain or stressing the body with extreme exercise can not only harm a mom during pregnancy, they can also be harmful for the baby, causing physical and developmental issues. They can also lead to miscarriage or complications during birth.

At SureBaby, we don?t want to preach, but there?s a reason why women with eating disorders are considered high risk during pregnancy. There?s also a reason why your doctor is encouraging your to eat right and eat more, and most likely telling you not to stress too much about the scale. (We always advise you to talk often with your doctor about your nutrition and weight gain during pregnancy).

Call us old school, but we still believe that pregnancy weight gain is natural and healthy, and that women should use the time to really feel comfortable in their bodies, adapting and even celebrating their changing shape.

And while we all wish we had personal trainers and chefs to help us lose pregnancy weight as quickly as possible like the stars do, good eating habits and taking care of yourself and your baby are just as effective in dropping the pounds ? even if it does take a little longer than in Hollywood! Our advice is don't stress about it, and remember that under every red-carpet, form-fitted dress on a new celebrity mom, is likely a very good, but very uncomfortable set of Spanx.

Those are our thoughts, now we want to know yours. Do you feel there?s too much pressure on women to snap back into shape after pregnancy? Are we losing focus on what?s important?

Let us know in the SureBaby comments!

Europe's first gene therapy approval anticipated

What a milestone. After three decades of development, European regulators have recommended approval for the first commercial gene therapy in Europe and the US.

The therapy is for a rare genetic condition called lipoprotein lipase deficiency (LPLD). People with the disorder can't break down globules of fat in the bloodstream called chylomicrons. As a result, these clog up blood vessels in the gut and pancreas, often resulting in agonising visits to intensive care. The only existing treatment is for those with LPLD to avoid fat in food altogether.

In healthy people, muscle cells make an enzyme called lipoprotein lipase, which breaks down chylomicrons. People with LPLD lack the enzyme because of defects in the gene that makes it. The new treatment, called Glybera, works by replacing this gene with a healthy copy. Doctors inject into patients' upper leg muscles a harmless virus that permanently implants a working gene into muscle cells, theoretically enabling patients to make the enzyme indefinitely.

"Patients with LPLD are afraid of eating a normal meal because it can lead to acute and extremely painful inflammation of the pancreas," says J?rn Aldag, the chief executive officer of uniQure BV, the company that has developed the therapy in Naarden, the Netherlands. "Now, for the first time, a treatment exists for these patients that not only reduces this risk, but also has a multi-year beneficial effect after just one treatment," he says.

Aldag says that although the treated people can't risk eating lots of fatty food, they are likely to make around 5 to 10 per cent of the enzyme that a healthy person would make, which is enough to clear the fat they take in from a healthy diet. The treatment is still effective in people who trialled the injections six years ago.

Aldag also said the news was good for gene therapy generally. "This is phenomenal, because the promise of gene therapy is clear," he says. "It allows you to restore the natural function of the body and bring a long-term effect to patients, many of them with very severe diseases."

First for the West

Although several experimental trials of gene therapy are under way, some of them for more than a decade, uniQure is the first in the West to win regulatory approval for a commercial treatment.

The only other gene therapy available commercially is Gendicine, which was approved in China in 2004 to treat cancer.

On 20 July, experts at the European Medicines Agency recommended that Glybera be approved. The European Commission will have the final say within three months ? however, it usually follows the EMA's advice.

Although the disease affects only one or two people in every million, the treatment is valuable because no other options exist. When the company tested the treatment in 27 patients, it reduced fat concentrations in blood within one to three months, and reduced the frequency of pancreatic pain attacks by 50 to 60 per cent.

UniQure is now pursuing other gene treatments for a blood clotting disorder and Parkinson's disease.

Murky past

The approval is a landmark in the chequered history of gene therapy. A trial of a gene treatment for children with severe combined immunodeficiency, who have no functioning immune system, was called off after some of the patients developed leukaemia. Activation of cancer-causing oncogenes by the viruses that delivered the treatment was blamed. After a temporary suspension, the trial led by Alain Fischer at the Necker Hospital in Paris resumed in 2005.

The biggest setback to gene therapy was when a patient called Jessie Gelsinger died in 1999 after reacting to the virus he was injected with.

But in recent years, a multitude of trials have reported successes against HIV, Parkinson's disease and a rare form of blindness.

Obama Meets Victims, Families in Devastated Aurora, CO

As the nation tries to piece together what drove the largest mass shooting in U.S. history, President Barack Obama traveled to the town of Aurora, Colo., today to console the wounded and the loved ones of those lost in Friday's movie theater tragedy.

After more than two and a half hours of private meetings with the distraught victims he emerged, red-eyed, to quote scripture.

"He will wipe away every tear from their eyes," the president said in a hallway of University of Colorado Hospital, quoting from Revelation 21:4. "Neither shall there be morning, nor crying, nor pain any more. For the former things have passed away."

Obama told assembled press of his mindset when he approaches families who have lost their own.

"I come to them not so much as a president, but as a father and husband," he said. "And I think that the reason these stories have such an impact on us is because we can all understand what it would be to have somebody we love taken from us. What it would be like."

Those who met with the president held conversations "filled with memory," he said.

"It was an opportunity for families to describe how wonderful their brother, or their son or daughter, was and the lives that they have touched," he said.

Admitting that words were inadequate in these situations, Obama said he tried to assure them the world had them in their prayers.

Twelve were killed when a gunman unloaded four weapons' full of ammunition into a packed midnight premier of "The Dark Knight Rises," a new Batman movie. Police say the suspect, James Holmes, wounded an additional 58 in the chaos, most of them through gunfire. The high number of casualties has made it the largest such incident in the country's record.

Remarking on national attention to "the perpetrator of this evil act," the president said he was sure his memory would fade away after feeling the "full impact" of justice.

"What will be remembered, are the good people who were impacted by this tragedy."

Five minutes away from the theater, the university hospital received 23 of those injured in the attack. Ten remained as of the president's visit, with seven in critical condition.

The president met with some of those remaining patients in the intensive care ward. Two young women in particular stood out in his mind - 19-year-old Allie Young and best friend Stephanie Davies.

Young, according to the president, was seated very closely to the gunman when he threw canisters of smoke or tear gas into the crowd. Jumping out of her seat to warn the moviegoers, she was instantly shot in the neck, rupturing an artery.

"Apparently as she dropped down to the floor, Stephanie - 21 years old - had the presence to drop down with her, pull her out the aisle, place her fingers over where Allie had been wounded, and apply pressure the entire time while the gunman was still shooting," he said. "Allie told Stephanie she needed to run."

Davies refused, said the president, and the young woman instead dialed 9-1-1 with her other hand. She remained with her friend until authorities arrived and then helped move her across two parking lots to awaiting ambulances.

"They represent what's best of us, and they assure us that out of this darkness a brighter day is going to come," the president said.

The role of consoler has become familiar to Obama, who has witnessed four other violent shooting rampages since assuming office. But unlike the shootings at Fort Hood, Texas, and Tucson, Ariz., this visit would not see his presence at a formal memorial service. Instead, the president elected to remain in the more intimate confines of the hospital, for now.

He spent about three hours total in Colorado after his plane touched down at Buckley Air Force Base, which itself was affected by the tragedy. The base lost two service members: airman Staff Sgt. Jesse Childress, 29, and Petty Officer 3 rd Class John Larimer, 27.

Obama also met with local officials in Aurora, including Gov. John Hickenlooper, Mayor Steve Hogan, and police chief Daniel Oates, who accompanied him to the hospital. Earlier this morning Hogan told ABC's This Week that Obama's presence "means a lot" for his town.

"I think the president coming in is a wonderful gesture," Hogan said. "He's coming in, really, to have private conversations with the families. I think that's totally appropriate. You know, as the governor's indicated before, he certainly could have come to the vigil, but that would have made the focus on the president, not on the community, and he was well aware of that."

Hogan said he has received phone calls from the president and others "literally from around the world," since Friday.

"We need a little bit of time to grieve, and then start to heal, and it's just good to know that others care," Hogan said.

In a separate interview, Oates said the families' "pain is undescribable."

"We can't feel it the way that they do," he told ABC's David Muir. "I am glad that the president is coming today and they can at least get some kind of comfort from him. But it's just, the whole thing is just so damn horrible."

Oates' own daughter was at a Batman premier that fateful night, but was found at a different theater in Aurora.

Friday's rampage has brought the politics and deprecation of campaign season to a halt, with the president and Mitt Romney cancelling trips and interviews as national leaders paused to reflect on the tragedy and offer their condolences. And for at least today that refrain remained; tonight he travels to San Francisco, ahead of prescheduled trips across five states beginning Monday.

Campaign spokeswoman Jen Psaki told the traveling press a grassroots event in Portland, Ore., was nixed out of respect for what she called a "different energy and enthusiasm" it would have generated. Additionally, all television ads from Obama's reelection committee will be pulled in Colorado for the week.

This was the president's second visit to the state in less than a month to cope with loss. In late June he toured a Colorado Springs neighborhood to console homeowners caught in devastating wildfires. At least two were killed in the blaze, which devoured hundreds of homes.

Vice President Joseph Biden is scheduled to speak Monday to the National Association of Police Organizations in Palm Beach, Fla., where he is expected to address the law enforcement community's response to the shooting.

Amazon's mobile ambitions grow

Amazon plans to expand its mobile platform and broaden its offering of devices beyond e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet, analysts, developers and retail partners said ahead of results next week from the world's largest Internet retailer.

Amazon is to introduce up to five or six tablet SKUs, or stock-keeping units, according Demos Parneros, president of U.S. Retail for Staples, which sells the Fire.

The tablets will be different sizes, including a 10-inch model, Parneros said. Amazon spokespeople declined to comment on the company's plans.

Amazon is making its own tablets to help the company sell more digital goods, such as MP3s, movies, TV shows, apps and games. Physical versions of these products, such as CDs and DVDs, were a big business for Amazon, but they are now in decline.

Having its own devices sitting atop a software platform that offers digital content to more than 100 million, credit-card-wielding customers already programmed to buy, could help Amazon become a major mobile platform player, challenging Apple, Google, Microsoft and Facebook.

"You're seeing the Apple play book recreated by everyone else who wants to play in the mobile device ecosystem. Amazon is the latest entrant," said Niccolo de Masi, chief executive of Glu Mobile, which develops mobile games for the Fire.

"The Kindle Fire is off to a great start," he added. "We will be supporting all new devices that have promise. They are trying to build on the foundations they have."

Data = Smart phone?
Amazon launched the seven-inch Fire in September, so the company has almost a year of data on the spending habits of these tablet owners. If they have increased purchases of digital goods through the device, that may embolden Amazon to introduce other devices, such as a larger, more expensive tablet and even a smart phone, analysts and others said.

"Amazon will keep working on this path of providing mobile devices and tablet devices," said Giordano Contestabile, an executive at PopCap, a unit of Electronic Arts whose games include: Plants vs. Zombies, Bejeweled and Peggle on the Fire. "We're all waiting," he added.

Purchases of Amazon e-books surged after the company introduce the Kindle e-reader in 2007, Citi Research analyst Mark Mahaney said.

"If a device can do that to their oldest, stodgiest category, imagine what else can benefit from a smart phone," he said. Mahaney's Taipei-based colleague Kevin Chang told Citi clients in November that an Amazon smart phone would be launched in the fourth quarter of 2012.

Amazon is expected to report second-quarter results on July 26. During a conference call after first-quarter results in April, Evercore analyst Ken Sena asked what traction the company was getting from the Fire and what the thinking was around a Kindle smart phone.

Amazon Chief Financial Officer Tom Szkutak dodged the smart phone question, but said the Fire was spurring purchases of "a lot" of digital content.

"We are very pleased with what's happening," the CFO added.

Since the Fire came out in September, Amazon's share of the video market has climbed to 13 percent from 10 percent, according to The NDP Group. In music downloads, Amazon's share rose by one percentage point to 14.4 percent, NPD data show.

"They haven't grown exponentially but that's a healthy gain post the Kindle Fire," said Russ Crupnick, senior entertainment industry analyst at NPD.

Lab 126 grows
Recent job postings by Amazon's Lab126 research and design center in Silicon Valley suggest the company is working on new mobile devices that will run on wireless carrier networks.

Gregg Zehr, a former hardware developer from Apple and Palm, heads Lab126, which is based a short drive from Apple's headquarters in Cupertino, California.

Lab126 had just over 500 employees listed on the LinkedIn professional network in September, when Amazon launched the Fire. That has grown to 865 as of mid-July , including 792 in the San Francisco Bay Area, according to LinkedIn. An Amazon spokesman declined to comment about Lab126.

"Amazon's Lab126 development center has grown a lot and has a pretty enormous staff now - much more staff than is needed to handle a few e-readers and the Kindle Fire tablet," said Robert Brunner, founder of Ammunition, which has helped Barnes & Noble design its Nook devices.

"They are there to develop other devices," said Brunner, who helped develop the first Kindle e-readers. "Knowing what I know about Jeff Bezos and Amazon, it's likely they are doing a smart phone."

Seven job postings by Lab126 in recent months sought hardware and software engineers who have experience with cellular products including cell phones and smart phones.

One posting for a Hardware Validation Engineer told candidates they may be responsible for adhering to carrier requirements for Lab126's products.

Another for a Field Quality Engineer said candidates would coordinate with carriers to fix problems. "Prior wireless or related field test experience that covers smart phones or smart devices a plus," Lab126 added in the job posting.

"That clearly means they will put out a device that needs to function on carrier networks," Brunner said. "They are either planning on building that functionality on to tablets or a smart phone."

'Watch out world'
Ed Liljegren, a hardware developer from Apple and Nokia joined Lab126 in May 2011 and became a manager of Emerging Technology in April, according to his LinkedIn profile.

He described his new job as "Future Concept Development. Watch Out World for what we are doing next!" Liljegren added on LinkedIn.

Amazon also hired two Windows Phone managers from Microsoft in recent months, according to their LinkedIn profiles. Robert Williams is now director of Amazon's App Store and Brandon Watson is director of product management for Kindle Cross Platform.

In early June, Watson blogged about his first few months at Amazon.

"I'm lucky that I get to work on a product that I really love, and loved before coming on board," he wrote. "I can't really say much about some of the things on which I am working. I can say that the goals of some of the teams are huge. Huge."

Watson then recounted what an Amazon senior vice president told him during the recruitment process.

"He said, 'the goal of Kindle was to enable a system to allow someone to buy any book ever published, and have it delivered anywhere in the world in 60 seconds. It's time to think bigger.'"

Neither Liljegren, nor Watson, nor Williams returned calls or emails seeking comment.

Children's Health & Fitness ? Start With Good Eating

July 22nd, 2012 by Len Saunders

From The Herald?..

Ask Dr. K

Dear Dr. K: I keep hearing about childhood obesity. What can I do now to make sure my 5- and 7-year-olds learn healthy eating habits?

Dear Reader: You?ve definitely got the timing right: Now is the time to start. Not only can you establish healthy eating habits, you can also influence the chemistry of your kids? bodies so that they are less likely to get fat as adults.

All the talk about childhood obesity is not just media hype. The number of children who are overweight or obese is increasing at an alarming rate. These kids are at much higher risk for developing serious health problems as adults ? high blood pressure, heart disease and Type 2 diabetes.

Not only that: They?re even at increased risk for developing ?adult? diseases when they?re still children. One of my nephews who was obese developed Type 2 diabetes. That condition used to be called ?adult onset? diabetes because it typically affected overweight people after they turned 50. When he got sick, my nephew was 12.

Good eating habits will help your kids avoid obesity. Children between the ages of 5 and 10 years typically need between 1,500 and 2,000 calories per day, from a variety of healthy foods. An average day should look like this:
