After sporting a cane for a few months due to a knee injury, Brad Pitt's walking stick has become a play toy for his and Angelina Jolie's kids as Brad begins the process of strengthening his atrophied leg.

"I was getting all lopsided," Brad, 48, explained to Access Hollywood's Shaun Robinson at the 2012 Screen Actors Guild Awards in Los Angeles on Sunday. "So, I'm trying to balance out now."

The actor -- who, in addition to his SAG Award nomination for "Moneyball," was also nominated for an Academy Award -- revealed the Jolie-Pitt family enjoyed a good old-fashioned pancake breakfast to celebrate his Oscar nod.

"I got 'em all jacked up on sugar," he told Shaun. "I'm surprised they weren't sent home from school!"

Earlier on Sunday, the actor revealed to "CBS Morning News" correspondent Lee Cowan he's been receiving "a lot of pressure" from his kids to marry Angelina - a comment the actor is beginning to regret.

"Why did I say that?" Brad laughed, when asked about the already-highly-publicized marriage reveal. "No, but there's an issue of equality in marriage, and we wanted to hold out until everyone had the right.

"I was just commenting on, one, it's really difficult [to wait] when you love someone, and two, that we're getting a lot of heat from the kids," he explained.

HBT: Astros aren't changing name after all

Remember how new Astros? owner Jim Crane created a mini-controversy last week when he said he?planned to conduct a study on whether to change the team?s name? ?Well, the results are in.?The Astros aren?t going anywhere?except the American League West, that is.

According to Astros??Sr. Director of Social Media Alyson Footer, Crane said the following in a taped video message to season-ticket holders:

?You asked for change and we added several fan friendly initiatives last week and we hope you like them,? Crane said. ?We will continue to listen, and to look for additional ways to improve on and off the field.

?One thing that we are not going to change is the name. We received strong feedback and consensus among season ticket holders and many fans, and we will not change the name Astros. The Houston Astros are here to stay.?

This whole thing probably got more attention that it really deserved, as a name change never appeared to be a serious consideration in the first place, but it?s easy for things to take on a life of their own during the cold and boring days of winter. Still, I doubt many would complain if they made some changes to their uniforms.

Iran vows to stop "some" oil sales as inspectors visit (Reuters)

TEHRAN (Reuters) ? Iran sent conflicting signals in a dispute with the West over its nuclear ambitions, vowing to stop oil exports soon to "some" countries but postponing a parliamentary debate on a proposed halt to crude sales to the European Union.

The Islamic Republic declared itself optimistic about a visit by U.N. nuclear experts that began Sunday but also warned the inspectors to be "professional" or see Tehran reducing cooperation with the world body on atomic matters.

Lawmakers have raised the possibility of turning the tables on the EU which will implement its own embargo on Iranian oil by July as it tightens sanctions on Tehran over the nuclear program.

But India, the world's fourth-largest oil consumer, said it would not take steps to cut petroleum imports from Iran despite U.S. and European sanctions against Tehran.

The International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) inspection delegation will try to advance efforts to resolve a row about the nuclear work which Iran says is purely civilian but the West suspects is aimed at seeking a nuclear weapon.

Tension with the West rose this month when Washington and the EU imposed the toughest sanctions yet in a drive to force Tehran to provide more information on its nuclear program. The measures take direct aim at the ability of OPEC's second biggest Oil exporter to sell its crude.

In a remark suggesting Iran would fight sanctions with sanctions, Iran's oil minister said the Islamic state would soon stop exporting crude to "some" countries.

Rostam Qasemi did not identify the countries but was speaking less than a week after the EU's 27 member states agreed to stop importing crude from Iran from July 1.

"Soon we will cut exporting oil to some countries," the state news agency IRNA quoted Qasemi as saying.

India, a major customer for Iranian crude, made clear it would not join the wider international efforts to put pressure on Tehran by cutting oil purchases.

"It is not possible for India to take any decision to reduce the imports from Iran drastically, because among the countries which can provide the requirement of the emerging economies, Iran is an important country amongst them," Finance Minister Pranab Mukherjee told reporters on a visit to the Unites States.

The United States wants buyers in Asia, Iran's biggest oil market, to cut imports to put further pressure on Tehran.

DISCUSSION POSTPONED

Iranian lawmakers had been due to debate a bill Sunday that could have cut off oil supplies to the EU in days, in a move calculated to hit ailing European economies before the EU-wide ban on took effect.

But Iranian MPs postponed discussing the measure.

"No such draft bill has yet been drawn up and nothing has been submitted to the parliament. What exists is a notion by the deputies which is being seriously pursued to bring it to a conclusive end," Emad Hosseini, spokesman for parliament's Energy Committee, told Mehr news agency.

Iranian officials say sanctions have had no impact on the country. "Iranian oil has its own market, even if we cut our exports to Europe," Oil Minister Qasemi said.

Another lawmaker said the bill would oblige the government to cut Iran's oil supplies to the EU for five to 15 years, the semi-official Fars news agency reported.

By turning the sanctions back on the EU, lawmakers hope to deny the bloc a six-month window it had planned to give those of its members most dependent on Iranian oil - including some of the most economically fragile in southern Europe - to adapt.

NUCLEAR WATCHDOG

Before departing from Vienna, IAEA Deputy Director General Herman Nackaerts said he hoped Iran would tackle the watchdog's concerns "regarding the possible military dimensions of Iran's nuclear program."

Mehr quoted Foreign Minister Ali Akbar Salehi as saying during a trip to Ethiopia: "We are very optimistic about the outcome of the IAEA delegation's visit to Iran ... Their questions will be answered during this visit."

"We have nothing to hide and Iran has no clandestine (nuclear) activities."

Striking a sterner tone, Iran's parliament speaker, Ali Larijani, warned the IAEA team to carry out a "logical, professional and technical" job or suffer the consequences.

"This visit is a test for the IAEA. The route for further cooperation will be open if the team carries out its duties professionally," said Larijani, state media reported.

"Otherwise, if the IAEA turns into a tool (for major powers to pressure Iran), then Iran will have no choice but to consider a new framework in its ties with the agency."

Iran's parliament has approved bills in the past to oblige the government to review its level of cooperation with the IAEA. However, Iran's top officials have always underlined the importance of preserving ties with the watchdog body.

The head of the state-run National Iranian Oil Company (NIOC) said late Saturday that the export embargo would hit European refiners, such as Italy's Eni, that are owed oil from Iran as part of long-standing buy-back contracts under which they take payment for past oilfield projects in crude.

The EU accounted for 25 percent of Iranian crude oil sales in the third quarter of 2011. However, analysts say the global oil market will not be overly disrupted if parliament votes for the bill that would turn off the oil tap for Europe.

Potentially more disruptive to the world oil market and global security is the risk of Iran's standoff with the West escalating into military conflict.

Iran has repeatedly said it could close the vital Strait of Hormuz shipping lane if sanctions succeed in preventing it from exporting crude, a move Washington said it would not tolerate.

Frenchman killed in armed robbery in Red Sea resort (Reuters)

CAIRO (Reuters) ? A Frenchman was killed when armed men raided a currency exchange office Saturday in the Egyptian tourist resort of Sharm el-Sheikh on the Red Sea, security officials and the French embassy said.

South Sinai Governor General Khaled Fouda told Reuters that a German national had also been wounded but was in a stable condition in hospital.

The French embassy confirmed a Frenchman had been killed without giving further details.

Sharm el-Sheikh is on the Sinai Peninsula, home to many popular tourist resorts. However, many people own weapons in inland areas of the peninsula, and analysts say the region has become more lawless since an uprising ousted President Hosni Mubarak last year.

Dwight Schrute Spin-Off From 'The Office' In Works

NBC considering launching an 'Office' spin-off focused on Rainn Wilson's Dwight Schrute character.
By Gil Kaufman

Rainn Wilson as Dwight in "The Office"
Photo: NBC

Up until now, we've gotten just an occasional glimpse at the bizarre happenings at the Schrute family beet farm. But if NBC has its way, we may be seeing a lot more of agritourism hotel owner and Assistant to the Regional Manager at Dunder Mifflin Dwight Schrute.

According to The Hollywood Reporter an unnamed source at NBC confirmed that the network is thinking about a spin-off centered on Rainn Wilson's paintball-loving character and his family's farm. The show would delve deeper into life at Schrute Farms and include a number of other Schrutes.

With "The Office" not yet picked up for a ninth season, the plan is to start testing the concept in an episode later this season. So far, it's believed that Wilson, as well as actor/showrunner Paul Lieberstein and executive producer Ben Silverman are involved.

"Paul and Rainn have been joking for years about Dwight's life on the farm, his family and how ill-suited he is to run a B&B," a source told the Deadline Hollywood. "A while ago, it started to feel like a show to them. NBC agreed, it's been further developed to include multiple generations, many cousins and neighbors. At its base it will be about a family farm struggling to survive and a family trying to stay together."

As the Reporter noted, while Wilson's quirky character has a devoted cult following -- as evidenced by such comprehensive fan sites as Schrute Space -- the spin-off concept is not necessarily a slam-dunk. Just as the short-lived, unfunny "Friends" spin-off "Joey" crashed and burned, it's possible that the shrinking "Office" fan base might not follow Dwight off into the beet fields.

"The Office" got a major overhaul at the end of last season, when star Steve Carell left and actor James Spader was brought in as new boss Robert California. So far, the strong ensemble cast has struggled to find its legs without Carell's outrageously clueless Michael Scott to ground them and average ratings have slipped down by more than a million viewers since last season. Given the show's legacy and appeal to young male viewers, though, the trade magazine said it was likely "The Office" would be picked up for another season.

Some cancer patients continue to smoke after diagnosis ? - CNN ...

Doctors say smoking is such an addictive habit that many people still light up, even when they're seriously ill. Now a new study finds even cancer patients rely on tobacco to get them through the day, and that's not good.

According to new data, published in the online version of the journal CANCER, researchers have found a large number of colon and lung cancer patients did not give up smoking, even though they knew it was not good for them.

According to physicians, giving up tobacco is crucial after a cancer diagnosis because smoking can hinder treatment results.

Investigators looked at smoking rates in approximately 5,300 lung and colorectal cancer patents. At the time of their diagnosis, 39% of lung cancer patients and 14% of the colon cancer patients smoked. Looking at the same patients five months later, researchers found 14% of lung cancer patients and 9% of colon cancer patients were still smoking.

Doctors noted lung cancer patients who still lit up after a diagnosis were usually on Medicare, had had very little treatment for their condition and were heavy smokers before their diagnosis.

Those with colon cancer who continued to smoke, tended to be uninsured, under- educated males. They also were heavy smokers before treatment.

By using this data, researchers hope they can guide oncologists to identify continuous smokers, so doctors can help patients stay smoke free.

?These findings can help cancer clinicians identify patients who are at risk for smoking and guide tobacco counseling treatment development for cancer patients,? said Dr. Elyse R. Park, of the Massachusetts General Hospital/Harvard Medical School in Boston, who headed up the research.

In an accompanying editorial in the online journal, Dr. Carolyn Dressler, of the Arkansas Department of Health in Little Rock, noted the importance of physicians and other caretakers to address tobacco cessation, especially when cancer patients are diagnosed.

?Most clinicians acknowledge the importance of addressing tobacco cessation in their patients; however, few do it,? Dressler wrote. ?We know enough now to implement effective cessation programs to identify and help cancer patients quit at the time of diagnosis and support them to prevent relapse. By doing so, we maximize patients? response to therapy, their quality of life, and their longevity."

BOSTON, MA -- Lifestyle counseling, practiced as part of routine care for people with diabetes, helps people more quickly lower blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels and keep them under control, according to a large, long-term study published in the February issue of Diabetes Care.

Researchers at Brigham and Women's Hospital (BWH) conducted a retrospective cohort study of more than 30,000 people with diabetes who received diet, exercise and weight-loss counseling in a primary care setting over the course of at least two years (with an average follow-up time of almost seven years) and who had elevated blood glucose, blood pressure or cholesterol.

They found that the use of counseling reduced the time it took for patients to lower blood glucose, blood pressure and cholesterol levels. Previous studies have documented the success of counseling in a clinical trial setting, but until now many have questioned whether it would be as effective when conducted as part of ongoing treatment in a primary care setting, where fewer resources are available and patients may be less motivated.

"This study shows that persistent lifestyle counseling can and should be a critical piece of any routine diabetes treatment plan," said senior author Alexander Turchin, MD, MS, director of informatics research at the BWH Division of Endocrinology. "Clearly it gets people to goals faster than when they are not given continued encouragement and information on how to increase physical activity levels, eat properly and reduce lipids. Primary care providers should take these findings to heart."

The study found that the more frequently patients received counseling, the faster they reached their treatment goals, with those who received counseling at least once a month achieving the best results. Those who received face-to-face counseling once a month or more took an average of 3.9 weeks to reach their target goals for A1C, blood pressure and cholesterol, as compared to 13.5 months for those who received counseling only once every one to six months.

Because counseling can be time intensive researchers recommend that working with providers such as nurse practitioners, physician assistants or dietitians, as well as providing support in group settings, may be more cost-effective ways of providing this necessary support.

UK police: Tabloid lied, hacked for scoops on girl (AP)

LONDON ? News of the World journalists used phone hacking, harassment and lies to secure scoops on missing British schoolgirl Milly Dowler, police reported Monday, detailing a litany of abusive press practices.

In one incident, someone impersonated the teen's mother and called a potential witness to ask for information about the 13-year-old, who was found dead months later in September 2002. British police did not specify who made the bogus call.

The new details about the News of the World's relentless pursuit of information about the Dowler case, revealed in a letter to lawmakers released Monday, illuminate one of the most sordid episodes of the British phone hacking saga.

The scandal over illegal practices at the now-defunct tabloid exploded in July after The Guardian newspaper reported that the News of the World had intercepted Dowler's voicemail messages while she was still considered missing.

The revelation that journalists had invaded a murdered girl's privacy to score scoops horrified Britons and led to a cascade of lawsuits, resignations, arrests and official inquiries.

Surrey Police Deputy Chief Constable Jerry Kirkby, whose force investigated the girl's disappearance, said in the letter that the News of the World freely admitted to police that it had broken into Dowler's voicemail, saying it had obtained her cell phone number and password from fellow schoolchildren.

Kirkby also said a potential witness called his force to complain that a News of the World reporter was harassing him for information. He said the reporter claimed to be working in "full cooperation" with police.

Kirkby said the "reporter's assertion that he was working with the police was untrue." The reporter's name was redacted from the letter.

The most troubling incident outlined in Kirkby's letter was a pair of phone calls made to a recruitment agency by someone claiming to be the teenager's mother, Sally Dowler, on April 13, 2002.

At the time, the News of the World wrongly believed Dowler had run away to find work with the agency and was staking out the premises with what one employee described as "hordes of reporters."

Dowler family attorney Mark Lewis said in an email that Sally Dowler never made the call.

"No doubt there will be current investigations as to who that was," he said.

Lewis also asked why Surrey Police did not act sooner to investigate the deception, saying that "no thought seems to have been given to the effect on the Dowler family."

In a separate development, British lawmaker Tom Watson wrote to police asking for an investigation into email hacking at Rupert Murdoch's The Times of London.

In December, Times publisher Tom Mockridge acknowledged that a former reporter had engaged in computer hacking while at the venerable title. The Guardian newspaper, citing unidentified colleagues at The Times, said last week that the reporter had hacked into the Hotmail account of a well-known anonymous police blogger in a bid to discover his identity.

The blogger, Detective Richard Horton, sued The Times in 2009 to stop the paper from exposing him but eventually lost.

Noting that no mention was made of computer hacking at the time, Watson said "it is almost certain that a judge was misled."

The opposition lawmaker, a dogged opponent of Murdoch, said he wanted police to investigate whether anyone at The Times was guilty of perjury or obstruction of justice ? allegations which, if confirmed, could have serious consequences for The Times, which is more than 225 years old.

News International, responsible both for The Times and the News of the World, reiterated that the interception of Dowler's phone was "shocking and unacceptable" and that those who sanctioned or carried out the hacking should be held accountable for their actions.

Police confirmed that they'd received Watson's letter and said they were in contact with the lawmaker over the allegations.

HRW calls on West to accept Islamist rise to power

CAIRO (AP) ? The United States and other Western governments must accept the new reality that Islamists have emerged to fill the power vacuum in the Arab world after a wave of popular uprisings, Human Rights Watch said in its annual report Sunday.

The New York-based group also urged Islamist parties, which have emerged as the biggest winners in recent elections in Tunisia and Egypt and are expected to fare well in Libya, to respect the rights of women and religious minorities, saying they cannot "pick and choose" when it comes to human rights.

Islamist parties are "genuinely popular" in the Arab world, said HRW's executive director, Kenneth Roth, warning that "ignoring that popularity would violate democratic principles."

"Being a political Islamic government should not be a reason to turn a government into a pariah," Roth told reporters in Cairo, where the group released its annual report.

The Arab Spring revolts began in Tunisia in late 2010 and quickly spread to Egypt, Libya, Yemen, Syria and Bahrain, deposing or challenging authoritarian rulers as citizens who long seemed incapable or unwilling to rise against decades of repression took to the streets in a stunning awakening.

Since the collapse of the regimes in Egypt and Tunisia a year ago, Islamist groups once largely confined to the political sidelines, such as the Muslim Brotherhood, have formed parties and contested parliamentary polls, winning the greatest share of seats.

Even the ultraconservative Salafis, who abstained from politics under Egypt's ousted President Hosni Mubarak, have fared well, winning more than 20 percent of the vote in the country's first post-uprising ballot.

Roth was cautious when asked about concerns about potential human rights violations under Islamist rule. He said that so far, Islamists have said "a lot of right things," but said the true test will be how they deal with the full sweep of human rights once in power.

"These are the big questions," he said.

The Muslim Brotherhood, for example, has been most interested in political freedoms, but Roth noted that "it is very difficult to secure political freedom if you are not respecting religious and women rights."

In some ways, the unexpected Arab uprisings have amounted to a slap to the United States and other Western governments, which had supported autocratic regimes that served as bulwarks against Islamists hostile to the West and appeared to offer stability in a volatile region.

"The West backed an array of autocrats as long as they, in turn, supported Western interests," Roth said. "The West is still adjusting to this historic transformation."

He added that the wave of uprisings "show that the forced silence of people living under autocrats should never have been mistaken for popular complacency."

Roth acknowledged Western governments were re-evaluating their policies as new governments emerge in the region.

Western nations have been accused of being selective in supporting the protesters, with NATO airstrikes proving key to the ouster of slain Libyan strongman Moammar Gadhafi. Meanwhile, the West has stood largely on the sidelines amid continued crackdowns in Bahrain, Yemen and Syria.

"The people driving the Arab Spring deserve strong international support to realize their rights and to build genuine democracies," Roth said in the group's annual report, which covers some 90 countries. He added that the Arab world is in a "transformative moment," and it will not be an easy one.

Human Rights Watch pointed to five main issues that dominated the relationship between Western governments and their Arab autocratic friends: the threat of political Islam, the fight against terrorism, support for Israel, protection of the oil flow and cooperation in stemming immigration.

Even after the leaders of Egypt, Libya and Tunisia were toppled, Western governments remained hesitant to lean too hard on other shaky authoritarian leaders, the group said. China and Russia acted "obstructionist," using their veto power at the U.N. security council to halt pressure on Syria to stop killings of protesters.

The popular uprisings also have alarmed other repressive regimes such as China, Zimbabwe, North Korea, Ethiopia, Vietnam, and Uzbekistan, where rulers were worried about facing similar fates.

"The worst response to the Arab Spring is the dictatorial world who are living in fear of the precedents set in this region," Roth said. "China greatly deepened its repression in an effort to avoid jasmine rallies."

Saudi Arabia also continues to discriminate against its citizens and workers, according to HRW, which said 9 million women, 8 million foreign workers and 2 million Shiite citizens are either suppressed or lacking rights in the country.

Outside the Arab world, the last year did not witness significant progress in countries with poor human rights records, including China and North Korea, according to the report.

Corruption, poverty and repression still prevail in Equatorial Guinea, the tiny, oil-rich nation off the western coast of Africa, which has been ruled by Africa's longest-serving ruler, Teodoro Obiang Nguema, the group said.

Eritrea continues to be governed by "one of the world's most repressive governments," and its citizens are subjected to torture, detentions and restrictions on freedom of speech, HRW said.

It also cited Colombia, saying armed conflict in the South American country has displaced millions while paramilitary groups with ties to the security apparatus are on the rise.

Cuba, HRW said, remains "the only country in Latin America that represses virtually all forms of political dissent."

The group also claimed that even member states of the European Union have violated human rights through restrictive asylum and migration policies.

4 sought in fatal beating near Independence Hall (AP)

PHILADELPHIA ? Philadelphia officials are offering a $10,000 reward for information leading to the arrest and conviction of the suspects responsible for the fatal beating of a man trying to hail a cab outside a bar near Independence Hall.

Twenty-three-year-old Kevin Kless was beaten shortly before 2:30 a.m. Saturday in the city's historic district. Investigators say Kless was yelling at a cab that was driving away when three men got out of a car behind the cab, possibly thinking he was yelling at them.

Police say the men punched and kicked Kless, who fell to sidewalk severely injured. He was pronounced dead several hours later.

Officer Christine O'Brien, a police spokeswoman, said Tuesday investigators are looking for the three men and the car's driver, all of whom fled after the assault.

What Are Ron Paul's Intentions in 2012? (ContributorNetwork)

It can't be denied that Mitt Romney is the clear current front-runner for the Republican Party's presidential nomination. But among the Republican field in 2012 the next most compelling story might just be the consistency of Ron Paul. He did well in Iowa, finishing a close third; he did well in New Hampshire, finishing second. His poll numbers are even improving in South Carolina and beyond.

Let's take a closer look at Paul's campaign and explore his options going forward:

Could Ron Paul beat Mitt Romney, or anyone else, for the Republican nomination?

It seems highly unlikely and, in fact, almost impossible to imagine at this point. While clearly Paul has developed a solid following since he ran for president four years ago -- his showing in the polls is considerably better this time around than in 2008 -- unlike many of his follow Republican candidates, his popularity has remained remarkably steady throughout the 2012 campaign. While he has certainly seen a bump in the polls in recent weeks, it is difficult to imagine Paul getting the massive wave of widespread new support from across the nation that he would clearly need in order to overtake Romney in the upcoming primaries and caucuses.

So if he can't win, why is he staying in the race?

Well, Ron Paul certainly has a better chance to win the nomination at this point then, say, Rick Perry or Jon Huntsman and those two candidates remain in the race. As he has in past presidential races, Paul seems to find himself making arguments that other GOP candidates didn't make -- eliminating five cabinet level departments, slashing defense spending, an isolationist foreign policy. As a result, even if he can't win the nomination, Paul seems to be hoping to at least influence the conversation a bit. Whatever you might think of Paul's stances on the issues, he clearly has real conviction and seemingly a true desire to change the status quo in American politics.

Also, at 76 years old, Paul will likely not be running for president again. He has little to lose now by staying in the race and making things interesting for as long as he can.

Will he run as a third-party candidate?

There has been a lot of speculation that Paul might dump the Republican Party and make another third-party play for president. What isn't often talked about is his run as a member of the Libertarian Party during the 1988 presidential campaign when Paul did extremely poorly and received less than one-half percent of the vote. Paul probably realizes that he can do more ideological influence from within the G.O.P. rather than outside the party. Also, Paul clearly does not want President Obama to win a second term and a third party run would likely benefit Obama.

"Eck's Factor": Weekly Analysis for 1/13/12

Here are my takes on the noteworthy developments in the WWE over the past week:

?

Talking point: Kane terrorizes Zack Ryder and Eve

Eck?s Factor: I?m a horror movie buff, so I thought the thread of Kane stalking Ryder and Eve throughout Raw this past Monday was compelling. I especially liked the Changing a tire proves not so easy, Rydershot of Kane in the mirror in the background while Ryder was brushing his teeth ? very John Carpenter-esque. Involving Ryder in the John Cena-Kane rivalry has ?added another layer to the story and given Ryder a rub. Sure, Ryder?s main role is to be Kane?s victim, but on the bright side, he?s the U.S. Champion, the best friend of the top guy in the company and the potential love interest of Eve. Seems like this sports-entertainment thing is working out pretty well for ?Long Island Iced-Z.? Luckily for him, changing a flat tire efficiently isn?t a job requirement.

Talking point: Chris Jericho still has nothing to say

Eck?s Factor: He did it to us again. Just like when he returned to Raw the week before, Jericho came out on Raw this past Monday night, fired up the crowd and then left without saying a word. The difference was that this time, he was seemingly overcome with emotion as he soaked up the cheers. What a crazy turn of events: Hornswoggle now talks, but Jericho doesn?t. It?s unclear what Jericho is up to, but I?m enjoying whatever game he?s playing. When he finally does have something to say, I?ll definitely being hanging on his every word.

Talking point: Brodus Clay debuts at last

Eck?s Factor: Clay?s failure to debut (or re-debut, to be more accurate) on Raw week after week became a running gag, but the big man finally showed up on Monday. It was a memorable appearance, to say the least. I?m guessing the majority of fans were expecting to see a monster heel, but instead they got ?The Funkasaurus.? The WWE Universe?s initial reaction to Clay as a smiling, dancing teddy bear has been mixed, but I think Clay is going to get over in a big way. He actually reminds me a bit of Dusty Rhodes (the yellow polka dot-clad version of ?The American Dream,? not the three-time NWA World Champion). The bottom line is that Clay has a unique look and a ton of personality, and he?s a believable butt-kicker who can cut a decent promo. On top of that, his dancers (Naomi and Cameron Lynn) are certainly easy on the eyes, and I have to admit that I haven?t been able to get his entrance music out of my head all week (?Somebody call my momma!?). My only question is: what did Executive Vice President of Talent Relations and the Interim General Manager of Raw John Laurinaitis think of Clay?s debut?

Talking point: Edge, The Four Horsemen to be inducted into the WWE Hall of Fame The Rated-R Superstar, Edge

Eck?s Factor: Edge going onto the Hall of Fame this year is bittersweet. There?s absolutely no question that the Rated-R Superstar is deserving of the honor, but it?s a shame that his inclusion is happening this soon. Edge is only 38 and was at the top of his game when he followed his doctor?s advice and retired last April due to serious spinal issues. If circumstances were different, Edge would undoubtedly be in one of the headline matches at WrestleMania XXVIII instead of wearing a tux on stage and reminiscing about his career the night before. Like Edge, The Four Horsemen are also a no-brainer selection. They set the standard for heel factions and were big-money players for the Crockett promotion in the ?80s and WCW in the ?90s. The version of the Horsemen that has been selected for induction ? Ric Flair, Tully Blanchard, Arn Anderson, Barry Windham and manager J.J. Dillon ? was the best, in my opinion, though a case could certainly be made that Ole Anderson, an original member of the group, should be inducted as well. On a side note, Flair will be the first person in the WWE Hall of Fame to go in as a singles performer as well as a member of a group.

Talking point: Big Show accidentally injures AJ during World Heavyweight Title Match against champion Daniel Bryan

Eck?s Factor: Bryan overcame the odds and escaped with his championship yet again on SmackDown Friday night. This time, Bryan?s match against Big Show was stopped when his girlfriend AJ ? who was standing outside the ring during the contest ? was taken out on a stretcher after Big Show inadvertently ran into the diminutive Diva while chasing the champion. Afterward, Bryan berated a distraught Big Show, who was in tears over the incident. The question is whether Bryan was genuinely upset about what happened or if he somehow weaseled his way out of another seemingly no-win situation against Big Show. All I know is that, for me, Bryan has become the most interesting Superstar in WWE over the past few weeks.

Talking point: John Cena signs endorsement deal with Fruity Pebbles

John Cena adds flavor to Fruity PebblesEck?s Factor: The Rock has mockingly said that Cena looks like a bowl of Fruity Pebbles due to his penchant for brightly colored T-shirts, but Cena is the one who?s laughing now. Cena recently signed an agreement with Post Foods to appear on three million boxes of the breakfast cereal from this month through March. In response to the news of Cena?s deal, The Rock tweeted that he hoped his endorsement check was in the mail. I don?t know about that, but I am surprised that Rock never signed a deal with Sara Lee. Now if only CM Punk could get his WWE ice cream bars...

Talking point: Wedding highlights milestone episode of NXT

Eck?s Factor: The 100th episode of NXT airs next week and will feature the wedding of Maxine and Johnny Curtis. For those who don?t regularly watch the show (which is broadcast in a number of international markets in addition to being shown on WWE.com), you?ve missed out on an entertaining love triangle between Maxine, Curtis and Derrick Bateman, three talented performers who have bright futures in the WWE. Televised wrestling weddings are almost always fun, and something tells me that Maxine and Curtis won?t be able to get hitched without a hitch.

Disclaimer: The views expressed in ?Eck?s Factor? are those of Kevin Eck alone and do not necessarily reflect those of WWE.

WHO IS KEVIN ECK?
For those who are unfamiliar with me, I come to WWE from The Baltimore Sun, where I was an assistant sports editor and the author of a pro wrestling blog titled Ring Posts. In between two stints with The Sun, I worked as the editor of WCW Magazine from 2000 to 2001.

Off the Bench: Boggs sings Garth Brooks

During his professional career, former Major League Baseball player Wade Boggs was known for his keen hitting ability and fielding expertise.

One thing that I did not know about Mr. Boggs was his affinity for partaking in some karaoke and what appears to be a love of singing country music.

In the below clip from disc jockey Dangerous Dave in Key Lago, Florida, Wade decided to do a cover of the Garth Brooks classic hit ?Friends In Low Places? at a seafood restaurant:

That wasn?t the first time that Boggs decided to do a cover of that hit as he sung at a karaoke bar in Seakonk, Massachusetts called ?Luxury Box? back in 2009:

Rain soaking golf courses in 2011: Whatever happened to ...?

Whatever happened to rain dampening the use of Northeast Ohio golf courses last year? Ohio golfers remained soaked.

Ohio easily led the nation in most dropped rounds in 2011 through November, compared with the same period in 2010.

Golfers played 19,867 rounds in the Buckeye state through November, compared with 22,663 rounds through the same period in 2010, said Randy Stutzman, a spokesman for the PGA of America in Ponte Vedra Beach, Fla.

That's a drop of 12.3 percent.

No other state recorded a double-digit drop in rounds played. Kentucky was the second lowest at 9.9 percent, followed by Connecticut, 9.6 percent; and New Jersey and Pennsylvania, both at 9.2 percent.

Stutzman said the nation as a whole played 2.3 percent fewer rounds last year compared to the same time frame in 2010.

Record rainfall was the main reason Ohio led the nation for most dropped rounds from 2010 to last year.

"This is the worst year for playing golf in Ohio that I can ever remember," said David Griffith, tournament director for the Northern Ohio Section of the PGA. "We had so many issues to deal with...frost, rain, fog, storms, and when the weather was good, golf course conditions generally remained bad.

"We had the wettest spring ever, followed by heat and humidity in the summer because of all the spring rain, and that was followed by a rainy fall," he said. "For us, it was horrible. I think November was the only good month we had for golf."

Griffith's last statement regarding November was not disputed by area course owners and club professionals. In fact, Judd Stephenson, the head pro at Avon Oaks Country Club, said 106 golfers came out to play at the private course the day after Thanksgiving.

"Whatever happened to . . .?" is a weekly series updating some of the most newsworthy and interesting local stories covered in The Plain Dealer. Have a suggestion on a story we should update? Send it to John C. Kuehner at jkuehner@plaind.com.

"That was an astounding number considering how late in the year it was," said Stephenson. "For me, I can't wait for 2012 since 2011 was such a bad year for golf in our area and the state as a whole. That is, of course, assuming 2012 won't be as bad as (last) year was."

Stutzman said Ohio is not likely to lose its No. 1 position for more dropped rounds of golf when the final statistics for 2011 are compiled at the end of January, since cold weather normally decreases rounds of golf played in the northern states the final two months.

Despite leading the nation with the most dropped rounds, Stutzman said other states fared worse in lost golf revenue, which includes green fees, guest fees at private clubs and cart fees.

Wyoming recorded a 73.1 percent drop in revenues. Following Wyoming was New York, 54.9 percent drop; New Hampshire, 41.8 percent drop; Massachusetts, 41 percent, and Kansas, 22.5 percent.

These states have fewer public courses and charge higher green fees.

Ohio recorded a 21.4 percent drop in revenues, which was fifth.

Last year, Cleveland set a record 65.32 inches of precipitation, breaking the old record of 53.83 inches set in 1990, said Martin Thompson of the National Weather Service.

"If you're looking for a reason why golf was so down in our area this year, those numbers tell it all," Griffith added.

Espanyol president backs fans after racist chants

Associated Press Sports

updated 6:57 p.m. ET Jan. 8, 2012

BARCELONA, Spain (AP) -Espanyol's president says the club's supporters deserve top marks despite directing racist chants at Barcelona's Daniel Alves in Sunday's 1-1 Spanish league draw.

Sections of fans in the Cornella-El Prat stadium imitated monkey sounds every time Alves touched the ball. The Brazilian defender, who is black, told Catalunya Radio that he did not hear the chants during the game.

Ramon Condal, the president of Espanyol, is quoted as saying he "didn't like" the chants but "the public's behavior was a 10."

Espanyol coach Mauricio Pochettino says that racism "is something we want to eradicate in every football ground."

English clubs Liverpool and Chelsea are currently embroiled in scandals over alleged racist remarks made by their players.

(AP) ? Benedict Cumberbatch is shrugging off British newspaper criticism of his female co-star's nude scene in TV's latest season of "Sherlock."

It may be an effort to sell papers, he said, but it also helps the drama about a modern-day Holmes that will air its second season in the United States this May on PBS' "Masterpiece Mystery!"

"It's great publicity, isn't it?" Cumberbatch told the Television Critics Association on Thursday. "I think there's an awful lot of support for the way that we did it (the scene) and the taste that we did it with. And if it creates more interest in the program, thank you very much for that."

In this week's BBC-aired episode titled "A Scandal in Belgravia," Holmes has a close encounter with a whip-smart dominatrix, Irene Adler (Lara Pulver), who gets under his skin by flashing much of hers. Some detractors said the scene was too racy to air early in the evening, when children are more likely to be watching TV.

"It's not supposed to be a source of stimulation for the audience," Cumberbatch said. "It's supposed to throw his (Holmes') radar off, which is exactly what it does."

He played it coy on whether the hit series about Conan Doyle's great detective and sidekick Dr. Watson (Martin Freeman) will return for a third season. The actor has become a hot property with film credits including "Tinker Tailor Soldier Spy" and "War Horse."

During a Q&A by satellite from London, Cumberbatch pretended to seek legal counsel when asked if he would sign on for more "Sherlock." He also consulted another fictional lawyer when queried about his role in the forthcoming "Star Trek" sequel from filmmaker J.J. Abrams.

"I'm just getting my head around the fact it's happened. ... I'll give you my headline on it, which is, 'I'm over the moon.'"

Cumberbatch, who's going to the London premiere of "War Horse" this weekend, said Prince Charles also is expected to attend. "I work for him," the actor added," as ambassador for the Prince of Wales Trust that aids disadvantaged youth.

Kings fire Westphal, bring in Smart as new coach

SACRAMENTO, Calif.?If the Sacramento Kings stood any chance at success this season, Paul Westphal had to find a way to control talented but volatile center DeMarcus Cousins.

He couldn't?and lost his job because of it.

The Kings fired Westphal Thursday after two-plus seasons as coach, cutting ties amid a slow start and an escalating dispute with Cousins that threatened to consume the locker room. Assistant Keith Smart, let go by the Golden State Warriors in April after one season at the helm, signed a deal to become the team's new head coach.

With the Cousins-Westphal spat showing no resolution, Kings owners Joe and Gavin Maloof finally decided to take action. Instead of trading away a promising young big man,

FILE - In this March 27, 2011, file photo, Sacramento Kings head coach Paul Westphal reacts during an NBA basketball game against the Philadelphia 76ers in Philadelphia. President of basketball operations Geoff Petrie announced on Thursday, Jan. 5, 2012, that the Kings have fired coach Paul Westphal after two-plus seasons and a 2-5 start so far. ((AP Photo/Matt Slocum, File))

they made Westphal the first firing of the lockout-shortened season.

"We're in a situation here where you can't take a philosophical vacation because things are happening in real time," Kings president of basketball operations Geoff Petrie said. "You start to keep seeing the same things over and over again, you can't sit around and meditate forever about how you're going to approach them or try and change them."

Looking to build momentum for a new arena project, Sacramento stumbled at the start again this year.

A talented and athletic?albeit raw?roster entered Thursday night's home game against Milwaukee with a 2-5 record and in last place in the Pacific Division. Westphal finished with a 51-120 record in Sacramento.

The 61-year-old previously coached the Phoenix Suns and Seattle SuperSonics. In a statement released by the team, Westphal thanked the Maloofs, his coaching staff and players for the opportunity.

"While the job is far from finished, I am proud of the strides we were able to make," he said.

In the last week, all of Westphal's efforts in California's capital shattered.

He abruptly released a statement Sunday criticizing Cousins' commitment to the franchise and excused him from the team's game against New Orleans. He also said Cousins asked for a trade, which the center's agent refuted.

Petrie said he knew of Westphal's plans to release the statement but indicated that the Maloofs didn't. Petrie dodged questions about whether he supported Westphal's statement about Cousins, who expressed remorse for Westphal and said he would soon reach out to his former coach.

"It's been an emotional week and a lot of misunderstandings," Cousins said. "But it comes with the territory. Coach Westphal was a great teacher to a lot of us and a good coach. But this was a management decision."

Sacramento drafted Cousins with the fifth overall pick in 2010 after he spent one season at Kentucky. The 21-year-old was averaging 13.7 points and 9.3 rebounds in 26 minutes per game this season.

Cousins' behavior has been well documented going back to high school and his one season at Kentucky, mixing in dramatic and astonishing plays with outbursts against players, coaches, trainers and referees. His conditioning has been questioned and so has his work ethic. However, he showed up for training camp in prime condition and appeared ready for a breakout season.

"Of course people are going to tie (Westphal's firing) to me," Cousins said. "It will just show their ignorance. But like I said, it's not my decision."

The Kings had high hopes for a major turnaround this year.

Teamed with 2009-10 rookie of the year Tyreke Evans, Cousins was expected to anchor the front line for a young and emerging roster in the deep Western Conference. Sacramento finished 24-58 last season and missed the playoffs for the fifth straight year, although a late-season surge behind a healthy Evans provided hope that maybe the Kings weren't that far off from making the postseason again.

Turns out, the Maloofs couldn't wait any longer.

"We have a lot of respect for Paul and he's a classy individual. But it's time for a change," Gavin Maloof said at halftime of the Kings-Bucks game. "We just got to put everything behind us, all of the negatives and try and push forward and think positive."

The NBA and the Maloofs have given Sacramento a March 1 deadline to approve a plan to help finance a new arena, or the franchise could again explore relocation. The Kings nearly moved south to Anaheim, Calif., in April before the league's Board of Governors decided to give Sacramento another chance.

Now the Cousins conflict is Smart's responsibility to fix.

Smart, the former Indiana guard best known for hitting "The Shot" against Syracuse that won the Hoosiers the 1987 NCAA title, spent seven years as an assistant with Golden State before he replaced the ousted Don Nelson just before training camp last year. The Warriors went 36-46 under Smart, a 10-game improvement from the previous season but not enough to appease new owners Joe Lacob and Peter Guber.

Smart said he never imagined his next chance coming so soon. While taking over for a fired coach is not the type of opportunity he envisioned, he feels comfortable with the decision after Westphal passed along his blessings.

"He said, 'Don't do anything stupid and reject this. I want you to coach this team,'" Smart said of Westphal. "He felt it, and I felt that he meant it from the bottom of his heart."

Asked how he would approach Cousins differently after watching Westphal's relationship with the center go sour, Smart smiled and said, "Probably have a good relationship with him."

His job may depend on it.

German man charged with arson in New Year fires (AP)

LOS ANGELES ? A German man was charged Wednesday with 37 counts of arson in connection with a rash of fires that terrorized Los Angeles over the New Year's weekend.

Harry Burkhart, 24, was charged with 28 counts of arson of property and nine counts of arson of an inhabited structure, District Attorney Steve Cooley said.

The complaint alleged the arson was caused by the use of a device designed to accelerate the fire. Court documents revealed an incendiary device was placed under the engine area of cars.

More charges could be filed when Burkhart returns to court for arraignment on Jan. 24. He was ordered held on $2.85 million bail and could face several dozen years in prison if convicted.

"The amount of harm he did to the psyche of the citizens of these particular communities and all of Los Angeles County, I think it merits a life term," Cooley said.

Burkhart is suspected of setting more than 50 blazes that caused an estimated $3 million in damage. He has refused to cooperate with investigators since his arrest on Monday.

The charges are based on a dozen fires in the Hollywood and Sherman Oaks sections of Los Angeles and the city of West Hollywood.

Authorities said they believe he was angry over his mother's legal troubles and went on a nighttime rampage of burning parked cars a day after she appeared in court last week, when he went on a profanity-laced tirade denouncing the United States.

Court documents gave "a sense that this particular individual was set off by the incarceration of his mother, with whom he appears to be quite close, and he had latent anti-American views. That combination apparently set him off on this binge," Cooley said.

Burkhart had an unusual court appearance, where he alternated between sitting and standing and appeared to be in a dazed state, although he spoke occasionally with a German translator. He wore green sleeveless shirt, his long hair matted on the front of his face as he craned his head and body backward when he stood.

He has been put on suicide watch, a law enforcement official said Wednesday. The official spoke on the condition of anonymity because of privacy issues.

Burkhart's mother, Dorothee Burkhart, said in court Tuesday that her son is mentally ill.

Harry Burkhart's background remains hazy. The Los Angeles district attorney's office statement said he travels on a German passport "but purportedly was born in Chechnya" and was staying with his mother in Hollywood. The statement did not elaborate.

Harry Burkhart is also under investigation in Germany for a house fire north of Frankfurt days before he traveled to the U.S. in October.

The fire at the house, which belonged to the Burkhart family, has been ruled an arson, Marburg prosecutors' spokeswoman Annemarie Wied told The Associated Press Wednesday.

Burkhart did not live in the area, but his name surfaced as a suspect after he filed an insurance claim shortly after the fire, Wied said.

"When one files an insurance claim on a house the same day it burns down, it raises eyebrows," she said.

Burkhart, whom Wied identified only as "Harry B." in keeping with German privacy laws, has not yet been questioned in the case, and no arrest warrant has been issued for him. She said she did not know how long ago he had been identified as a suspect in the arson investigation.

Burkhart was in Los Angeles by Oct. 26 ? 12 days after the Marburg area fire ? according to U.S. court papers, which say that he went with his mother on that day to the German consulate to renew his passport.

In requesting no bail for Burkhart, investigators said a search of his Hollywood apartment turned up news articles about the Los Angeles fires as well as a series of car fires in Frankfurt last September. Authorities couldn't comment on whether Burkhart is a suspect in the German fires.

During a court appearance Tuesday, Dorothee Burkhart scanned a Los Angeles courtroom looking for her son, apparently unaware he was behind bars less than two miles away.

"Can you bring my son inside?" she pleaded with court officials. "Where is my son?"

Court documents unsealed revealed she is charged in Germany with 19 counts of fraud, including failing to pay for a 2004 breast-augmentation surgery and pilfering security deposits from renters.

In a brief court appearance, she appeared perplexed, wondering aloud if her son had disappeared or was dead. At one point, she said, he is mentally ill and questioned whether Nazis knew where she and her son lived.

"What did you do to my son?" she asked U.S. Magistrate Judge Margaret Nagle.

"I'm not here to address anything related to your son," Nagle responded.

Frankfurt court spokesman Guenther Meilinger told the AP that Dorothee Burkhart will go on trial for the fraud charges once she is extradited to Germany.

"We expect and hope that the U.S. authorities will look into the request for extradition ... so that the proceedings against her can continue," he said.

Both mother and son are being held without bail. Her next court hearing was delayed until Friday so she can hire an attorney.

Harry Burkhart was taken into custody after authorities received a tip from federal officials who recognized him in a security video that showed a pony-tailed man emerging from a garage where a car was set ablaze.

Burkhart's non-immigrant visa is set to expire Jan. 18, authorities said. His mother last entered the country lawfully in January 2007 and left four months later, officials said.
