Estate Planning Tips for New Mothers

When you have a new baby, a visit to the estate planning lawyer isn?t usually very high on your priority list?. mere survival, not to mention sleep is at the top of the list! But really, though, it should be. As a mom myself and an Orange County estate planning lawyer I am very aware of how your needs shift with the addition of a new little one in the mix.

At its heart, we think of estate planning as a tool to provide for those who come after us. When you bring a new baby home, your thoughts and desires immediately move toward figuring out how to care for him or her. While that means things like weighing the pros and cons of using a pacifier or choosing between disposable and cloth diapers, and choosing the perfect stroller, there are some other ?big picture? concerns that you should be considering now.

If you are still in the ?expecting? stage and your baby hasn?t been born yet, then this is a great time to start getting all of your documentation lined up and ready to implement. We all know that things get pretty hectic once the new baby arrives, so it?s not a bad idea to meet with your estate planning lawyer while you?re still pregnant.

For those whose little bundles have already arrived, however, it is not too late. (It?s almost never too late to start your estate planning, really.) Once you?ve got your bearings and can take a deep breath, pick up the phone and call an attorney who has good knowledge in the area and who specializes in helping families with kids. (Many estate planning attorneys specialize in working with the elderly, and they miss many of the important aspects that parents with small children need to consider).

When you meet with the estate planning lawyer, you can expect to cover several topics that are very relevant to being a new mother. For example, you may be advised to consider acquiring a life insurance policy. This type of policy can provide financial means for your child should you (or your baby-daddy) dies unexpectedly. By putting together a trust, you can even create a plan for how you would like the money to be used and who you trust to be in charge of that money.

Estate planning doesn?t just have to be about you dying, either. A good lawyer can help to direct you on topics such as how to prepare for retirement and how to set up a college fund for your new baby. These are the types of things that are always better to set up in advance because they will have more time to accumulate funds for later.

Finally, the most important reason to set up a meeting with your estate planning attorney is to name a guardian for your child. Should the worst happen, you want to know that someone you trust will be raising your precious little one. This is not something that should be put off, because it is the only way that you get to have a say in who that important person will be.

One thing is for sure, getting your legal and financial ducks in a row feels great and brings peace of mind, and all the love in your heart that you have for that little one is the best motivation to ?get it all taken care of!

Video: Plus-sized fashion goes mainstream

>>> this morning on "today style," plus-sized fashion shows . as annabel roberts shows, curvier figures are becoming all the rage on catw dscatwalks around the world.

>> reporter: red carpet stars, adele, christina hendricks , and octavia spencer , part of a new movement in hollywood -- curvy and proud. there's still nothing curve when he it comes to the catwalk. the models at london 's mainstream fashion week were predictably thin.

>> the fact that there isn't variation, that's a problem. and that is definitely a bad message to be sending out.

>> reporter: jada is a plus-sized model, dress size 14. she founded a london fashion week event where all the models were plus size. similar events have taken place in new york for several years. sitting in the front row , a woman from oregon on a mission.

>> plus-size women are constantly told all the time that they're not allowed to wear fashion, they're not allowed to feel beautiful. these events say you can.

>> reporter: what are you hoping to achieve with this event?

>> we are trying to educate people that plus size, curvy women can look great on the catwalk. and hopefully slowly but surely these will win the hearts of the plus-sized community.

>> reporter: this model says no question attitudes are changing.

>> i think it's very important. i think it's really that plus-size people themselves are making the change. i think it's very empowering to women in general.

>> reporter: singer adele was described as a little too fat by fashion guru karl lagerfeld . she hit back, "i represent the majority of women, and i'm proud of that." on the red carpet , she wears stunning designer gowns specially made for her fuller figure. for regular plus-size women, and that's more than half the female population in the u.s., clothes shopping can be a challenge.

>> i constantly am told that my section is downstairs in a back corner near furniture or menswear usually. i'm sorry, i thought i was a woman. i was allowed to shop in women's wear.

>> reporter: the hope is that thanks to fashion events like this and red carpet sensations like this curvy styles will become more fashionable. for "today," annabel roberts, nbc news, london .

Obama urges Congress to head off spending cuts

(AP) ? President Barack Obama says a little compromise is all Congress needs to turn off automatic, across-the-board budget cuts set to kick in a week from now.

In his weekly radio and Internet address, Obama says the cuts will slow the economy and hurt the middle class. He says thousands of teachers will be laid off and air traffic controllers will be forced into unpaid leave, leading to airport delays. He says almost 800,000 defense workers will also face furloughs.

Obama says he wants a balanced plan to deal with the deficit that mixes spending cuts with more tax revenue.

In the Republican address, Sen. John Hoeven of North Dakota says Obama should approve the Keystone XL oil pipeline, which would carry oil from Canada to Texas, as a way to create jobs and grow the economy.

Conserving corals by understanding their genes

Friday, February 22, 2013

In reef-building corals variations within genes involved in immunity and response to stress correlate to water temperature and clarity, finds a study published in BioMed Central's open access journal BMC Genetics. This information could be used to conserve or rebuild reefs in areas affected by climate change, by changes in extreme weather patterns, increasing sedimentation or altered land use.

A research team led by the Australian Institute of Marine Science, and in collaboration with Penn State University and the Aix-Marseille University, studied DNA variations (Single Nucleotide Polymorphisms, SNPs) across populations of reef corals found at a range of temperatures and water clarity along the Great Barrier Reef.

SNPs which correlated to water clarity and water temperature preferred by cauliflower coral were found in genes involved in providing immune response, and regulating stress-induced cell-death. This means that coral with a specific version of these genes tended to grow at higher temperatures (or water clarity) and another variant at lower. A similar story was found for staghorn coral - SNP in genes involved in detoxification, immune response, and defense against reactive oxygen damage, were found to be associated with temperature or to water clarity.

Dr Petra Lundgren, from The Australian Institute of Marine Science, explained, "Corals are particularly vulnerable to climate change. Not only is the temperature of the water they live in affected but extreme weather and higher rainfall leads to increased levels of sediment, agricultural runoff, and fresh water on the reef. This work opens up possibilities for us to enhance reef resilience and recovery from impacts of climate change and pollution. For example, if in the future we need to restore coral populations, we can make sure that we use the most robust strains of corals to do so."

PS4's final look is unknown even to a Sony exec, but it won't support the DualShock 3

PS4 Holiday 2013

There's been some debate over the state of the PlayStation 4's hardware when Sony declined to display the console itself at its PlayStation Meeting. As we're quickly learning, the company had good reason to keep the box under wraps: it's not quite done yet. Sony Computer Entertainment Japan President Hiroshi Kawano has revealed to 4Gamer that even he hasn't seen the finished system, and he only saw the DualShock 4 the day before it went on stage. We wouldn't worry about the design's progress just yet, but the news hints that Sony's timing on pulling it all together is much tighter than it was for the PS3 -- although that's not necessarily a bad thing.

Whatever the PS4 looks like in the end, we know it won't support the DualShock 3. Perpetual font of wisdom (and Worldwide Studios President) Shuhei Yoshida has warned that the PlayStation Move is the only controller making the leap to the next generation. That's not entirely surprising given the changes in button layout and the addition of some Move technology -- Sony likely wants to set some expectations, and our existing game library won't play on the PS4 as-is. The cutoff may still be disappointing for anyone who invested in a full set of gamepads for LittleBigPlanet sessions and has to once more start from scratch.

Tim Tebow Betrays the Christian Right

He gained a few unexpected fans in the gay community?today, but notoriously God-fearing quarterback Tim Tebow may have scared off the very supporters who saw him as a Christian celebrity even as his NFL career has fizzled ? they're calling his about-face on an anti-gay marriage pastor "disastrous," and declaring "his street cred with the evangelical community" all but gone.

RELATED: A Strong Front of Tim Tebow Schadenfreude Has Moved In

On Thursday morning, via a string of tweets, the backup QB for the New York Jets (for now, at least)?cancelled an upcoming appearance at the First Baptist Church in Dallas. Tebow's second-guessing?followed reports that First Baptist pastor Robert Jeffress attacked gay marriage, Islam, and Mormonism in several recorded sermons. The turnaround surprised many of Tebow's critics ? who have noted his support for the vehemently anti-gay?organization?Focus on the Family ? and, in equal measure, left some of his more vocal supporters on the Christian right more than gobsmacked. The?influential?conservative radio host Bryan Fischer, for one,?called Tebow?a "coward":

Does he disagree with him when he says that homosexuality is a sin? Does he disagree with him when he says that Islam is a false religion??If Tebow does not in fact disagree with Jeffress on any of these points, then his decision looks like nothing more than craven capitulation to the nattering nabobs of negativism and intolerance.

The pastor of First Baptist, Robert Jeffress, shared?Fischer's sense of betrayal ??according to Fox News Radio, he interpreted Tebow's cancellation as an affront to his church's values:

?To me, the real issue here is the controversy this has generated,? Jeffress said. ?It?s amazing that a church that believes faith alone in Christ is what saves a person and that sex should be between a man and a woman in a marriage relationship ? that somehow those beliefs are considered hate speech? That is historic Christian doctrine for the past 2,000 years.?

Tebow has long enjoyed the steadfast support of America's growing evangelical community ? a relationship cemented by on-the-field Tebowing and eye black with Bible verses, but also with?a Super Bowl ad?for Focus on the Family ? for which Fischer serves as a prominent,?if persistently controversial, mouthpiece. What's more, Tebow has been steadfast with the press, a Christian figurehead who rarely "flinches under pressure," as Fischer accuses him of, and actually keeps his relationship with God pretty private, despite outward appearance. Well, at least he doesn't flinch under pressure in post-game interviews; on the field is a whole separate story.

RELATED: Tebow Booed in New York; Yachtsmen Mourned in San Francisco

Meanwhile, Tebow's turnaround on the speech in Dallas has earned him accolades from outlets like the gay-themed sports website OutSports, whose founder wrote today:

It?s hard to believe the decision comes from anything but a revelation about Jeffress? anti-gay preaching that flies in the face of Tebow?s (generally) more positive and inclusive messages. Whatever the reason, good for Tebow for saying ?No? to this anti-gay church.

None of this means that Tebow is stepping out of the spotlight. On Twitter, he vowed to continue his Christian ministry elsewhere:

Authority on juvenile homicide to conduct seminar at Cowley College

    Special to the Courier

Phil Chalmers, considered America?s leading authority on juvenile homicide, will be one of the presenters during a two-day juvenile homicide super seminar at Cowley College March 19-20.

Arkansas City and Cowley College were fortunate to earn the right to host the seminar.

?I am really excited for this opportunity, as there will only be three of these seminars available nationwide,? said Matt Stone, director of security and public safety at Cowley College.

On day one of the seminar, Chalmers will conduct his ?Why Teens Kill? juvenile homicide seminar. Chalmers has interviewed more than 200 teen killers and school shooters, along with numerous serial killers, mass murderers, and sexual predators. The reason for these interviews is to delve into the minds of the offenders, and to explore why they killed, and if society could have stopped them.

On day two of the seminar, popular speaker Lt. Col. Dave Grossman will be conducting his ?Bulletproof Mind and Stop Teaching Our Kids to Kill? talk. Grossman is one of the world's foremost experts in the field of human aggression and the roots of violence and violent crime.

The class runs from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. both days, and the cost for this class is $199 per person. To get tickets, go to www.philchalmers.com, fill out the registration form, and enter your credit card information, or choose the option of bringing a check to the training. The check needs to be payable to Phil Chalmers, and should be in the amount of $199.

For details about the seminar content, contact Phil Chalmers at (330) 998-4340.

Bill Gates calls Microsoft?s smartphone strategy ?clearly a mistake?

Microsoft chairman and former CEO Bill Gates sat down for an interview with Charlie Rose on CBS This Morning?in which is talked a bit about how Microsoft is doing as well as some of his philanthropical experiences.?While philanthropy is a wonderful thing, seeing that here at?IntoMobile we have a tendency to stick to technology news, you?d be correct to assume I?ll be covering the former. In particular, Gates had a bit to say about Microsoft?s smartphone strategy.

Interviewer Charlie Rose brought up how he sees many articles about Microsoft criticizing its business moves or suggesting what it could do to get back on track. ?Well, we appreciate the advice,? Gates quipped as the two shared a laugh.

He was also asked about Steve Ballmer?s leadership performance to which Bill Gates somewhat indirectly answered the question on a positive note. ?Well, he and I are two of the most self-critical people ? you can imagine. And here were a lot of amazing things that Steve?s leadership got done with the company in the last year. Windows 8 is key to the future, the Surface computer. Bing, people are seeing as a better search product, Xbox.?

Smartphones, however, he was less optimistic about. ?We didn?t miss cell phones, but the way that we went about it didn?t allow us to get the leadership. So it?s clearly a mistake,? he commented. By that remark, it seems Bill Gates isn?t satisfied with having a strong position in second or third like RIM has been aiming for lately.

It?s long been known that Gates and Ballmer are close friends so it?s unlikely that Gates would ever publicly trash talk the guy. Other critics, like former Microsoft executive?Joachim Kempin have been more than willing to point out the company?s faults in recent years.

Not again! Bus carrying Triumph passengers breaks down

Stepping off the Carnival Triumph ? the filthy, sweltering cruise ship that was stranded in the Gulf of Mexico for five days after an engine fire knocked out power ? wasn't the end of the travel nightmare for some passengers.

A bus carrying Triumph passengers from Mobile, Ala., where the ship docked late Thursday, to New Orleans broke down Friday, Carnival Cruise Lines confirmed to NBC News. The company said that another bus picked up the passengers and they continued toward New Orleans.

Clark Jones of Dallas, who was on the bus, said it was stuck about an hour.

?I?m pretty tired,? he said later. ?I don?t know, life gives you lemons ? I guess you have to eat the lemons sometimes.?

Other buses from Mobile reached New Orleans without incident Friday, and some passengers boarded charter flights for Houston, near the ship?s port of Galveston.

?We survived it,? passenger Veronica Arriaga told NBC affiliate WDSU in New Orleans. ?We are here, we're on land. Thank God.?

Delays hampered the last day of the rescue of the Triumph. With the ship in sight of shore, a cable snapped between a tugboat and the larger vessel. Also Thursday, Carnival at least twice pushed back its estimate for when the ship would dock in Mobile.

The federal government is facing significant financial risks related to extreme weather events, and states and cities can no longer depend on it for extra help after such events occur, the Republican chairman of House Oversight and Government Reform Committee said Friday.

The warning from Rep. Darrell Issa, R-Calif., came at a press conference about the release of a new report by the Government Accountability Office, which identified ?climate change? on its 2013 list of items presenting high risk to the federal government.

The report said the federal government faces financial challenges from climate change, including the costs of weather-related damage to property it owns, losses through flood insurance and crop support programs, and costs of emergency aid in disasters.

?These events are primarily the responsibilities of the cities and states,? Issa said at the news conference. ?And I will point out that we can no longer assume that the federal government will come in with an emergency supplemental [funding] every time there is an [extreme weather] occurrence. We have a responsibility to be proactive: Proactive in asking the states and the cities to be prepared to meet more of these requirements.? Proactive in making sure that we withhold the funds, either through insurance funds or through actual appropriations, that are appropriate for the real anticipated events.?

The GAO?noted that the Federal Emergency Management Agency is on the hook for more than $80 billion in aid for disasters declared during the 2004-2011 fiscal years -- and the White House asked for more than $60 billion in aid to help the East Coast recover from Hurricane Sandy.

Read the GAO report in PDF form

And yet, the report says, the government has not been coordinating a response to climate change among its agencies --- partly a problem of the complexity of the issue. The report advises that a strategic plan be developed, directed at common goals for all federal agencies.

The report is a biennial assessment of government operations it deems at high risk for fraud, waste, abuse and mismanagement or as otherwise "needing broad-based transformation." Some of its other recommendations:

    • Develop a better understanding of how a changing climate will affect the large federal flood and crop insurance programs. For instance, the report said, sea-level rise and long-term erosion should be considered when flood maps are updated.
    • Develop a federal approach to providing climate data to state and local governments so they can make better decisions.
    • Develop better criteria for FEMA to assess a jurisdiction's ability to recover on its own after a disaster.

In a related issue, the report also says looming gaps in coverage by polar-orbiting weather satellites could affect forecasts and "warnings of extreme events."

The satellites provide a global perspective each morning and afternoon. The report said the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration has acknowledged there could be a gap of 17 to 53 months between the time the current afternoon satellite fails and the time a new one can be launched to replace it.?

The report also noted that the risk of a gap exists in coverage by the satellite in the morning orbit -- if the Department of Defense's next satellites don't work as intended.

The report said NOAA officials believe these gaps "would result in less accurate and timely weather forecasts and warnings of extreme events, such as hurricanes, storm surges and floods."

After the report?s release, members of the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee held a news conference at which both Democrats and Republicans acknowledged the government?s significant fiscal exposure as a result of weather related disasters.

Issa called it a ?nonpartisan? issue, while ranking Democrat Rep. Elijah Cummings, D-Md., labeled the GAO report ?a wake-up call? for Congress to start paying attention to impacts of climate change.

In total, the GAO report listed?30 federal programs and operations on its high-risk list. Climate change risk and the weather satellite gap were both new additions. Management of interagency contracting and IRS business systems modernization both were removed from the list because the GAO decided that sufficient progress had been made to address past vulnerabilities.

Maggie Smith: I haven't seen 'Downton'

NEW YORK (AP) ? Millions of people have watched Maggie Smith on "Downton Abbey." But she's not one of them.

The 78-year-old actress, who portrays Lady Grantham in the popular PBS series, told "60 Minutes" that she hasn't watched the drama because doing so would only make her agonize over her performance. She said she may watch it someday.

Smith told Steve Kroft, in an interview to be televised Sunday, that what she takes from the role is "the delight of acting."

She has two Oscars, three Emmys and a Tony Award, but said the "Downton Abbey" role has given her more public recognition than anything in her career.

    Lexus tops vehicle dependability study

Today?s vehicles are more reliable than ever, according to a new study, though Toyota remains the king when it comes to long-term dependability.

Nonetheless, the gap between import and domestic brands continues to close, with General Motors giving close chase to Toyota and its luxury brand Lexus, finds the J.D. Power and Associates? 2013 Vehicle Dependability Study.

?The continuous improvement in long-term dependability means consumers should have more confidence in three-year-old vehicles, whether they are keeping their current vehicle or shopping for a used car, truck, crossover or SUV,? says David Sargent, vice president of global automotive at J.D. Power and Associates, or JDPA.

Based on the responses from 37,000 owners of 2010-model cars, trucks and crossovers, the annual study shows that the number of problems being reported has fallen five percent since the previous report, known by the shorthand VDS. On average, there were 126 problems for every 100 vehicles, or 126 PP100 in Power-speak, down from 132 in the 2012 study. That?s the lowest figure since Power launched the widely-quoted measure of vehicle reliability in 1989.

The Detroit Bureau: As Truck Wars Heat Up Ram Ramps up Production

Domestic makers have traditionally lagged behind foreign-based rivals but the gap has narrowed sharply for 2013, Detroit makers averaging a score of 133 compared to 123 for imports. The higher the score the more the problems. As recently as 2011, the gap was 18 points, Power points out.

There is a frequent, though not absolute, link between the way individual brands perform in Power?s short-term quality studies, such as the Initial Quality Study. Toyota?s Lexus routinely leads the IQS and it is tops in the 2013 VDS, as well, with a benchmark 57 problems per 100. In other words, barely half of the Lexus owners surveyed reported any problems at all.

Porsche came in second, followed by Lincoln, Toyota and Mercedes-Benz to round out the Top Five. Meanwhile, Chrysler?s truck arm, the Ram brand, posted the biggest improvement of any marque, its score improving by 52 PP100.

The Detroit Bureau: Auto Bailout Losses Dip - Still Likely to Top $20 Billion

In terms of individual product segments, Lexus led in two, with the Lexus ES350 named tops in the Entry Premium Car category, while its RX model led among Midsize Premium Crossover/SUV models. Toyota took seven segment awards overall, including its Scion and Toyota brands, more than any other automaker.

But General Motors was second on the list with four individual segment awards for models including the Buick Lucerne sedan and the big Chevrolet Tahoe SUV. American Honda took two segment wins, with Audi, Ford, Hyundai, Mazda and Nissan also grabbing awards.

The 2013 Vehicle Dependability Study delivered some significant surprises, most notably by revealing that conventional wisdom is wrong when it comes to the reliability of all-new products. ?The perception that all-new or redesigned models can?t be as dependable as those that have been on the market for a year or more is not accurate,? Sargent stresses, adding, ?The rapid improvement in fundamental vehicle dependability each year is more than offsetting any initial glitches that all-new or redesigned models may have.?

The Detroit Bureau: Chevy Stuggles to Kickstart Slow-Selling Malibu Sedan

The upward trend in vehicle dependability is certainly good for those looking to buy a new vehicle. But it?s perhaps even better news for those in the market for a ?nearly-new? vehicle.

?If you can?t afford a new vehicle, or simply don?t want one, you should feel confident when buying a certified pre-owned (CPO) vehicle,? notes a Power statement.

There has been a significant increase in demand for CPO vehicles in recent years. Most makers now offered a certified used car program in which models coming off lease undergo extensive inspections and, if necessary, repairs. They are typically backed by like-new warranties.

Procession escorts ex-Navy SEAL Kyle to burial

AUSTIN, Texas (AP) ? After a 200-mile journey, former Navy SEAL sniper Chris Kyle was buried Tuesday in Austin as his family members and fellow SEALS looked on amid the sounds of drums and bagpipes.

A giant Texas flag flew at half-staff over the Texas State Cemetery as Kyle was laid to rest. Kyle, considered to be the deadliest sniper in U.S. military history, was killed along with a friend earlier this month while at a North Texas gun range.

A white hearse carrying Kyle's flag-draped coffin was among 200 vehicles in a procession that left Tuesday morning from Kyle's hometown of Midlothian, about 25 miles southwest of Dallas, to travel to Austin. Many motorists pulled to the side of roads to watch the procession that included motorcycles, motor coaches, police cruisers and other vehicles.

It briefly came to a halt when three motorcycles in the procession went down just north of Austin, sending two people to the hospital with non-life threatening injuries, said Belton police Sgt. Larry Berg. He said Navy SEALs in the procession rendered first aid until authorities arrived.

"Heroes on duty and heroes off duty, certainly," Berg said.

Larry Key, one of about 100 Patriot Guard Riders who gathered for the event, said he came in tribute to Kyle's service. Kyle, 37, completed four tours in Iraq and wrote the best-selling book "American Sniper."

"It's our way of honoring Chris and his family," said Key, a Vietnam veteran from Denton.

In Austin, hundreds of people gathered on roads stretching nearly a mile from the cemetery. Many who came to watch the procession were combat veterans in leather jackets who parked their motorcycles three wide around the permitted area of the gravesite. Others were businessmen in suits on their lunch break from the nearby Capitol, families with strollers and at least one jogger taking a break from an afternoon run.

Mike Lamb, 24, stood about a half-mile from the cemetery wearing a mustard yellow Marine Corps shirt and holding a sign that read, "Fair Winds and Calm Seas Frogman! R.I.P."

Lamb said he called in sick from work to see the procession. Because of that, he was at first reluctant to give his name. But he then rationalized that it didn't matter. Next month, Lamb is leaving for boot camp in the Marines.

"(Kyle) was the last person that I would have expected to end up like that," Lamb said. "Because he was so into Wounded Warriors and helping soldiers with (post-traumatic stress disorder). He was a warrior overseas and at home."

An Iraq War veteran, Eddie Ray Routh, 25, has been charged in the killings of Kyle and his friend Chad Littlefield. Routh's brother-in-law told authorities that Routh had recently been diagnosed with PTSD.

Authorities say Kyle, Littlefield and Routh arrived together at the Rough Creek Lodge shooting range, about 50 miles southwest of Fort Worth, on the afternoon of Feb. 2. Routh later fled in Kyle's truck.

According to a search warrant, Routh told his sister and brother-in-law that the men "were out shooting target practice and he couldn't trust them so he killed them before they could kill him."

On Monday, some 7,000 people attended a two-hour memorial service for Kyle at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington. Kyle's coffin was placed at the Dallas Cowboys' star at midfield.

His widow, Taya Kyle, told the crowd she was broken but that her family would "put one foot in front of the other" to get through their grief. She said she told her two children that they will remember Kyle's silly side, Texas twang and the prayers they prayed together.

Littlefield's funeral was held Friday in Midlothian. Afterward, Littlefield's relatives said the outing with Routh was intended to be therapeutic.

Google+ Hangouts to Host Events With Obama, Space Station Crew

Google+ Hangouts will be used by the president and by the International Space Station crew in separate events to take questions from citizens.

Google+ Hangouts will soon be used again by President Barack Obama for the second time in his presidency, while the crew of the International Space Station will use it for the first time later this month to take questions from citizens about life in Earth's orbit. Obama's Google+ Hangouts session will come at 4:50 p.m. ET Feb. 14 to answer questions from the American people two days after his State of the Union Address, which is being delivered Feb. 12. "When President Obama heads to a joint session of Congress [Feb. 12], he'll be honoring the 200-year old tradition of delivering the State of the Union to Congress and the American people," wrote Ramya Raghavan, a spokesman for the Google+ Politics division, in a Feb. 11 post on the Google Official Blog. "Two days later, the President will turn to Google+ to continue a more recent tradition, by taking questions online after his speech." This is the second time that Obama has participated in such an event. He held his first Google+ hangouts session Jan. 30, 2012, six days after his State of the Union Address that year.? Obama's online session, which is being called a "Fireside Hangout" in the tradition of presidential "fireside chats" of the past, will feature questions that have been sent in ahead of time by citizens and questions that are raised by several participants inside the Hangout, according to Raghavan. "During the conversation, the selected participants will ask the President their own questions?but we'd also like to hear from you before the Hangout," Raghavan wrote. "To let the President know what's on your mind, head to the White House YouTube channel and submit a video or text question. You can submit or vote on questions you'd like to hear him address until 11:59 p.m. ET on Wednesday, February 13." Eight days later, on Feb. 22, the crew of the International Space Station will hold their own Google+ Hangouts live chat to share their experiences in Earth orbit with interested viewers back home from 11 a.m. to noon ET. The session will be the first time that NASA has used Google+ Hangouts for an International Space Station mission, according to a post on NASA's Website. Viewers can see the session live using Google+ or YouTube. "This unique opportunity will connect you, our fans, with astronauts living and working on the orbiting laboratory 240 miles above the Earth," the NASA post states. "During the hangout, astronauts Kevin Ford, Chris Hadfield and Tom Marshburn will answer questions and provide insights about life aboard the station," the post states. "Station crews conduct a variety of science experiments and perform station maintenance during their six-month stay on the outpost. Their life aboard the station in near-weightlessness requires unique approaches to everyday activities such as eating, sleeping and exercising." Viewers can submit video questions prior to the Hangout, and several questions that have been submitted will be selected and answered by astronauts on the space station and on the ground, according to NASA. The astronauts will also answer real-time questions that are submitted by NASA followers on Google+, Twitter and Facebook. To submit a video question, you must upload your video clip of less than 30 seconds to YouTube and tag it with #askAstro, according to NASA. "Submitters should introduce themselves and mention their location. Questions must be tagged with #askAstro to be considered. The deadline to submit video questions is Feb. 12."

To ask a real-time question during the event on Google+ or Twitter, participants can use the hashtag #askAstro or you can post a comment on a thread on NASA's Facebook page that will open for questions on the morning of the event.

To join the Hangout, participants can visit NASA's Google+ page. NASA continues to expand its use of social media platforms such as Google+, Twitter and Facebook. In August 2012, NASA partnered with Google Earth to offer images of Mars from NASA's Curiosity Rover as it was beginning its exploration of the red planet. Also last August, NASA's Kennedy Space Center was featured in an online Google Street View tour of the sprawling and historic facility.

SNETTISHAM: Former Mayor who loved music and arts

Further tributes have been paid this week to former borough mayor and serving councillor David Johnson, who died last Thursday.

Mr Johnson, 75, of Station Road, Snettisham, was diagnosed with cancer of the gullet when he was West Norfolk?s mayor in 2008-09.

His widow, Sheila, told the Lynn News: ?He had an operation and recovered from it, but it returned just over a year ago.

?He couldn?t get around and gradually deteriorated and for the last three months had been virtually confined to home.?

At Thursday?s West Norfolk Council cabinet meeting, council leader Nick Daubney called for a minute?s silence in memory of Mr Johnson.

He said: ?David gave a great service to this borough as a councillor and as mayor.

?We knew he was ill for some time. But, despite what I understand to be a pretty serious illness, he continued to undertake his duties.?

Mr Johnson was a regular contributor to the Lynn News, writing theatre and concert reviews for our entertainments pages since 1964.

Lynn Festival chairman Alison Croose said: ?David was a great lover of classical music and was always very enthusiastic about the big names and special performances King?s Lynn Festival has brought to the town over many years.?

Borough councillor and entertainments columnist Andy Tyler added: ?I knew him as a fellow borough councillor and reviewer for the Lynn News of classical music and varied entertainment. He was a former borough mayor (well deserved) and had extensive knowledge of music and performance. I always found him warm, friendly and full of sound advice. A lovely man and I shall miss him.?

Mr Johnson was born in Brancaster and lived in West Norfolk all his life.

On leaving Fakenham Grammar School at 16, he worked at Legge?s menswear shop in Hunstanton High Street, at the start of 50 years working in the clothing trade.

He became a partner with another ex-Legge?s employee, David Green, in a clothing store they named Davids, in Westgate.

Mr Johnson retired in November, 2003, following his election to the borough council, as an Independent, for Snettisham so that he could devote more time to his council duties.

He first entered local government when still in his 20s and went on to become the youngest ever chairman of Brancaster Parish Council.

Mrs Johnson said her husband enjoyed singing in the choir at St Mary?s Church in Snettisham, where he was also churchwarden.

A service of thanksgiving for his life will be held at St Mary?s Church on February 18 at 4pm.
