Leica Monochrom test turns up the ISO, doesn't bring the noise

leica-monochrom-vs-m9-iso-test

In the case of "why would you pay $8k for a black and white camera," exhibit 'A' would surely be the lack of a color filter array corrupting the image. Without one, the Leica Monochrom -- with a similar CCD to its M9 stablemate -- should have less noise. Tests comparing the two cameras on Red Dot Forum confirm it, with the Monochrom cleaner in glorious black & white at all ISO's up to the M9's maximum of 2500. Past that, a touch of NR gave the Monochrom a pleasing film-grain look to our eyes at ISO 5000, but at ISO 10,000 images started to sparkle and approach the "barely usable" range. Still, combined with the increased sharpness and resolution, very well-heeled purists might be tempted.

SD court upholds conviction in 1975 AIM slaying

(AP) ? The South Dakota Supreme Court on Thursday upheld a Canadian man's murder conviction and life sentence in the 1975 slaying of a fellow American Indian Movement activist, ruling that the state had jurisdiction to prosecute him.

John Graham was convicted in December 2010 of taking part in the killing of Annie Mae Aquash. Prosecutors said Graham and two other AIM activists, Arlo Looking Cloud and Theda Clarke, killed Aquash because they suspected she was a government informant.

Graham, a member of the Southern Tutchone tribe in Canada's Yukon Territory, argued that the government should not have been allowed to move his case from federal to state court after his extradition to the U.S.

However, the state's highest court ruled unanimously that the state had jurisdiction to prosecute Graham and that prosecutors presented sufficient evidence to convict him. Graham's sentence of life in prison without parole also is not grossly disproportionate to his crime, the justices said.

"Indeed, the evidence reflects that Graham was involved in Aquash's initial kidnapping, in ensuring that she was kept in captivity, in transporting her to her place of death, and in the ultimate shooting," Justice Steven Zinter wrote for the court.

Graham's lawyer, John R. Murphy of Rapid City, said he and Graham are disappointed in the ruling but will pursue secondary appeals.

"We are going to continue to pursue relief both in the courts in the United States as well as seeking to address certain matters regarding the propriety of the extradition in Canada," Murphy said.

South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley was traveling and not immediately available to comment on the ruling.

Aquash's body was found in a remote area in southwest South Dakota in February 1976. She was a member of the Mi'kmaq tribe of Novia Scotia. Federal agents investigated the case for years but didn't bring an indictment until March 2003, when Denver police arrested Looking Cloud.

Looking Cloud was convicted in federal court of first-degree murder in 2004 and sentenced to life in prison. A federal judge signed an order in August reducing Looking Cloud's sentence to 20 years.

Clark, who was never charged, died in October.

Graham was arrested in December 2003 in Vancouver, British Columbia, on federal charges in Aquash's killing. Two courts ruled that the U.S. government lacked jurisdiction to try Graham because he is not an American Indian. The case was eventually moved to state court.

Graham was acquitted of premeditated murder in the state trial, but was convicted of felony murder and sentenced to life in prison without parole. The felony murder charge alleged he was involved in a killing while engaged in another felony, kidnapping.

Graham argued that the state lacked jurisdiction to prosecute him for felony murder because he was extradited from Canada on a different charge, premeditated murder. He contended that his conviction should be overturned and he should be allowed to return to Canada to challenge his extradition.

But the Supreme Court said Canada consented in February 2010 to Graham's prosecution for felony murder.

"Graham has not argued that Canada did or would object to Graham's prosecution for felony murder. On the contrary, the only record evidence reflects Canada's express consent to the prosecution," the court said.

Graham also contended that several witness statements should not have been allowed at his trial, including those made by Looking Cloud about an alleged 2002 telephone conversation between Looking Cloud and Aquash's daughter, Denise Maloney, in which Looking Cloud said Graham shot Aquash with Looking Cloud and Clarke present.

Graham said Looking Cloud changed his story to negotiate a reduced sentence.

The Supreme Court said Looking Cloud's testimony was admissible because it was consistent with his prior statement to Maloney in the telephone call.

The appeal also questioned the inclusion of another person's testimony about a conversation in which Leonard Peltier ? who is serving a life sentence after being convicted in 1977 of shooting two FBI agents ? accused Aquash of being an FBI informant. The Supreme Court said that person's testimony was impermissible hearsay, but that its inclusion in the trial was a harmless error because it would not have affected the verdict.

AIM was founded in the late 1960s to protest the U.S. government's treatment of Indians and to demand the government honor its treaties with Indian tribes. The group grabbed headlines in 1973 when it took over the village of Wounded Knee on South Dakota's Pine Ridge Indian Reservation, leading to a 71-day standoff with federal agents that included the exchange of gunfire.

How To Care For A Caregiver - Retirement Homes

When we celebrate Mother?s Day and Father?s Day in May and June, we honor our parents with?gifts and special attention in appreciation of how they have loved us and sacrificed much to care for us.?But what about the family caregivers who love and sacrifice much to care for ill parents or spouses?many of their care receivers are not able show their appreciation due to their illnesses and disabilities.

As of yet, there is no official Caregiver?s Day (although perhaps there should be!). But if you?know a family caregiver, think about doing something special for him/her on any day. Some suggestions:

? Stop by with a treat or a meal?If you enjoy cooking, cook something; if not, just take out some?takeout.

? Bring some cheery flowers?or even a single rose, to make the caregiver feel appreciated.

? Come for a visit or phone the caregiver with a listening ear?you don?t need to give advice or?solve the caregiver?s problems; chances are the caregiver is quite isolated and just needs to be?able to talk and be heard.

? Send the caregiver an encouraging greeting card?or even an e-card or supportive email message.

? If you love doing yardwork or home repairs, offer to help the overwhelmed caregiver with chores?that you can do easily.

? Bring an entertaining book or CD to distract the caregiver?s mind from illness.

? If feasible, offer to stay with the care receiver for a short while so the caregiver can get out of the?house.

? Offer to help with errands if the caregiver can?t get out of the house easily.

Caring for a family member who has a chronic, long-term illness is often an extremely stressful,?overwhelming life situation with little, if any, time off or vacations. Caregivers go mostly unnoticed in?our busy, fast-moving culture; and not only is there no financial compensation for this job, but caregivers?must often give up paying jobs in order to provide full-time care.

It doesn?t have to take a lot of time or effort to give a lift to your caregiver friends. Just share a?little of whatever you enjoy, and you will get an emotional lift also. There are tens of millions of family?caregivers in North America.?surely we all know one.

Chinese tycoon sentenced to life in prison for smuggling, bribery

Chinese businessman Lai Changxing is escorted by security guards into a Vancouver federal courthouse on July 12, 2001.

(CNN) ? A Chinese court on Friday sentenced Lai Changxing, a tycoon who spent more than a decade as a fugitive in Canada, to life in prison for smuggling and bribery, the state-run news agency Xinhua reported.

Lai, 53, was sentenced by a court in the southeastern port city of Xiamen in Fujian Province, where the Chinese authorities say he ran a multi-billion dollar smuggling operation in the late 1990s.

Born into a peasant family, Lai received little in the way of education. He nonetheless rose to become one of China?s richest and most flamboyant businessmen.

His company?s interests included products as varied as cigarettes, cars, luxury goods and oil.

But in a crackdown on corruption, the Chinese government said Lai?s business was trading the goods illegally. It accused him of bribing dozens of government officials and telling his staff to do the same.

Lai evaded the authorities and fled to Canada in 1999. He was subsequently detained and spent years fighting extradition back to China. He lost that battle last year and was returned to China in July.

His lawyers had said they feared he may face the death penalty in China like others convicted of profiting from the smuggling operation.

But the extradition deal with Canada appeared to have prevented that outcome. Under Canadian law, nobody can be deported if they will face the death penalty.

Rutherford Dental Implants: Offering Comprehensive Solutions

Rutherford dental implants offer patients presenting with single and multiple missing teeth a comprehensive and long-term tooth replacement solution. Our teeth, as strong and resilient as they may seem to us, are vulnerable to general wear-and-tear, decay, dental caries and of course, accidental trauma. Consequently, as we age (although trauma received to the face and mouth is not age-discriminating), we may find that we start losing some of our original adult teeth. Now, we need not think long and hard about the impacts missing teeth have upon the aesthetics of the smile, not to mention the overall functionality of the oral cavity as a tool for chewing and articulation in speech. It can be socially crippling. Not only are you painfully aware that you have a ?gappy? smile, but struggling to eat and speak properly also has severe impacts upon your confidence and self-esteem.

The most important advancement dental science has made in recent decades is Rutherford dental implants, which are capable of completely restoring oral aesthetics and functionality!

Rutherford Dental Implants: How They Work

Rutherford dental implants are artificial ?tooth roots? made from the incredibly strong, durable, non-corrosive and lightweight metal, titanium. The choice of this metal in dental implantology dates back to pioneering work done by Swedish professor and orthopedic surgeon Per-Ingvar Br?nemark, who found that titanium displays the unique property of ?osseointegration?. This is the process whereby a strong biological bond with bone is established, thus enabling Rutherford dental implants to remain ?anchored? in the bone of the jaw without the support of surrounding teeth and gums. This finding completely revolutionized the field of both medical and dental science as it essentially enabled surgeons and implantologists to repair and replace bones and joints (and of course, teeth) in the human body. So, the conception of Rutherford dental implants in the early 1950?s led to massive technological and scientific developments in subsequent decades to the point we are now; capable of replacing single and multiple missing teeth, even in one day:

  • Rutherford dental implants function much like the tooth/teeth they are replacing so that you may return to your normal eating habits once healing has properly taken place. They facilitate a much stronger bite force than traditional tooth replacement technology, such as dentures.
  • Rutherford dental implants are virtually indistinguishable from the tooth/teeth they are replacing: One of the main reasons patients seek out Rutherford dental implants is to restore the aesthetics of their once full and beautiful smiles! As a result, a great amount of precision, effort and time goes into the fabrication of each implant so that it not only fits snugly in the jaw bone, but it is also virtually indistinguishable from the tooth it is replacing.
  • Rutherford dental implants feel similar to natural healthy teeth: after healing, typically there is absolutely no pain or discomfort in the mouth. Furthermore, being anchored in the jaw allows them to feel as secure as their original tooth/teeth when they were in a healthy condition.

A Final Note?

Rutherford dental implants offer patients a long-term solution to single and multiple missing teeth that, if looked after, can last as long as 20, 30 years or more! Don?t opt for inferior dental technology when a much improved quality of life is afforded by these ingenious dental devices.

My Stay at Disney?s Animal Kingdom Lodge

My recent trip to Disney World was spent at the Animal Kingdom Lodge. ?I had never stayed there before so I was really excited to to give it a try. ?This resort has been expanded in recent years so it now has two sections: Jambo House and Kidani Village. ?I stayed in Jambo House so that?s what I?ll be discussing this week. ?If I ever get the chance to stay at Kidani I?ll be sure to write a separate review for it. ?How did it stack up against some of my favorite Disney resorts? ?Read on to find out!

Guests can see the thatched roof of this resort from the road as they make their way to this beautiful resort. ?The building is meant to represent the lodges found in national parks in Africa with heavy influence from tribal architecture and design. ?The lobby here is worth a visit no matter where you are staying. ?I had been to this resort many times before without sleeping there and always marveled at the beauty of this space. ?The three storied space has a huge glass wall at the rear allowing guests to get a view of the gorgeous savanna and hopefully some of its inhabitants. ?In addition to the savanna there are rich woods, the inside of the thatched roof, amazing chandeliers made from tribal shields, and a fireplace with plenty of seating around it. ?If it is too warm to sit by the fire, there are plenty of other seating areas throughout the lobby including one just for kids. ?I could wander around the lobby for a while just taking in all of the sights and artifacts imported from Africa which are displayed throughout this vast area.

Although I love the design of both the interior and exterior spaces here, the main draw is obviously the animals. ??There are over 43 acres of land designated as savanna space where over 30 species of animals roam around for guests to enjoy. ?You can get a glimpse of the animals from many common areas throughout the resort, but the main viewing area off of the lobby is the largest and it also will have safari guides to answer any questions you may have about the animals. ?About half of the rooms also have a view of one of the three savannas as well. ?It is pretty awesome to sit out on your balcony and watch a zebra wander by.

My friends and I were lucky enough to book one of these savanna view rooms for our stay. ?We stayed in one of the DVC studio villas, so I haven?t had the chance to experience a standard room at the Animal Kingdom Lodge yet. ?Not only did we have a view of a savanna, but we also could see Expedition Everest from our balcony! ?Not too shabby. ?The number of animals on our savanna was not always what I had hoped for, so I think I?ll request a room on the main savanna next time. ?Otherwise the room couldn?t have been better! ?The dark woods and tribal patterned bedding make for a cozy and warm environment. ?Since it was a DVC studio it came furnished with a queen sized bed and a pull out sofa as well as a table with chairs, a chest of drawers, and a flat screen TV. ?It wasn?t huge, but three adults did just fine inside it.

It should be noted there are some special rules at this resort for rooms overlooking the savanna. ?The cast member who checks you in will go over them with you, but the basic idea is to not do anything to hurt the animals from your balcony. ?Please, please don?t feed them. ?The giraffe does not want your left over popcorn from Main Street. ?The cast member will also let you know balloons are not allowed at the resort at all because of the risk they pose to the animals. ?It is best to know that little tidbit before buying your kids balloons in one of the parks.

We tended to linger a bit more in our room than we usually do so we could enjoy the view from our balcony. ?If sitting on your balcony isn?t your thing (although it should be at this resort), there are tons of other things to do at this resort as well. ?I could fill an entire blog post with activities for kids of all ages to take advantage of at this resort. ?For example there are animal programs throughout the day, games by the pool, a gym, a spa, culinary programs, a museum exhibit, restaurants, and a wonderful pool facility. ?You could spend your whole vacation at this resort, actually take some time to relax for a change, and be completely satisfied with your Disney experience.

Speaking of the pool, this area is huge and includes a slide, plenty of seating areas, hot tubs, a playground, and a view of flamingos and whatever other animals might wander by. ?The landscaping surrounding this watering hole is lush and just as beautiful as the rest of the hotel. ?It was a treat to find animal habitats close by. ?Of course, there is also a pool bar available for anyone who might want to have a cocktail while they relax by the water.

There are three restaurants here to suit the needs of any guest. ?Boma: Flavors of Africa is a buffet which serves breakfast and dinner. ?For a fine dining experience check out Jiko: The Cooking Place which is always a hit among Disney World regulars. ?For quick service The Mara offers your standard theme park fare for less adventurous eaters, but also features African influenced dishes which are quite tasty. ? Why not visit The Animal Kingdom Lodge one day even if you aren?t staying there to take in the beauty of the building, the animals, and have a meal? ?Even if you just do this at the quick service facility, you?ll have a wonderful time. ?If you finished your evening at the resort?s lounge called Victoria Falls you?d really be in for a treat. ?I ate at all three of these restaurants during my stay so I?ll be sure to write more about my dining experiences in later blog posts.

I?d be be overlooking one of my favorite stores on Disney World property if I didn?t mention the Zawadi Marketplace. ?This shop can be found off of the main lobby and boasts some of the most unique items anywhere at Disney World. ?I rarely buy anything since a wood giraffe wouldn?t really go with the decor of my house, but I love to look around and admire the artistry of many of there items. ?Wood carvings are just the tip of the iceberg at this shop although it also offers typical gift shop souvenirs as well.

Transportation to the Animal Kingdom Lodge is all via bus. ?The bus system is shared with Kidani Village so be prepared to make more than one stop. ?I used the bus to get to the Magic Kingdom during my stay since it is often quicker to take the bus than your own car to that park. ?I didn?t wait long and things seemed to run smoothly so I was pleased. ?We did opt to rent a car though which I recommend no matter where you stay, but at this resort in particular. ?It is a bit far from everything except the Animal Kingdom Park so it will usually be faster to get around with your own car.

I absolutely loved my stay at this resort! ?The decor, the animals, and the amenities all make it worth returning for me and I hope to do so soon. ?Since I have not stayed in a standard view room I can?t say for sure, but I feel like I wouldn?t want to stay here without a view of the savanna. ?Maybe I can be proven wrong since this deluxe resort doesn?t come cheaply and I?ll want to give myself a bit of a discount by staying in a standard view on a future stay.

Apparently readers of the Unofficial Guide to Walt Disney World agree with my assessment since 94% of those surveyed said they would stay here again! ?What do you think of the Animal Kingdom Lodge? ?Did you love your stay there or maybe you much prefer another location? ?Let me know your thoughts in the comments!

PFT: Lions' Fairley arrested for DUI, eluding police

Divisional Playoffs - New Orleans Saints v San Francisco 49ersGetty Images

Recently, Jason Cole of Yahoo! Sports reported that, under the CBA, the NFLPA believes Saints quarterback Drew Brees will be entitled to a 44-percent raise in 2013, if the Saints use the franchise tag on him again.? But Brees has available to him a much more potent tactic, if he?s willing to walk away from $16.371 million in 2012.

Article 10, Section 15(c) of the labor deal explains that, if Brees doesn?t play in 2012, he can be tendered as a franchise player once again in 2013.? Though the language is a bit vague as to whether the franchise tender would equate to 120 percent of his 2011 salary or 120 percent of his 2012 tender (which is much higher), Section 15(c) contains a much more troubling provision, for the Saints.??? If Brees hold out for all of 2012, the Saints would be prevented from using the exclusive version of the franchise tag on Brees in 2013.

It gets better (or, from the Saints? perspective, worse).? If Brees never signs the 2012 franchise tender, the compensation in 2013 would drop to one first-round pick and one third-round pick.

While the Saints would have the right to match any offer sheet Brees signs elsewhere in 2013, a new team could put together a monstrous offer ? and then the Saints would have to decide whether to finally pay Brees or let him walk away.

The fact that neither the Brees camp nor the NFLPA have leaked this specific tidbit could mean that Brees has no real intention of sitting out the full season, contrary to reports that he won?t sign the one-year tender.? But if July 16 comes and goes without Brees signing a long-term deal and if he decides to exercise his right to not sign the one-year, $16.371 million tender, Brees? name could be added to the list of options for teams that need quarterbacks in 2013.

Intriguing (for now) possibilities include the Jets, who are always looking for a franchise quarterback, the Chiefs, the Raiders (yeah, G.M. Reggie McKenzie said he?s done trading draft picks, but coach Dennis Allen would be lobbying hard for Brees), the Eagles (this is Mike Vick?s make-or-break season in Philly), the Vikings (oh, the irony), the 49ers, and the Cardinals.

But then there?s the fact the Brees grew up in Texas.? Which could make the Texans and/or the Cowboys load the financial cannon in the hopes of bringing Drew home.

A lot of things have to happen before Brees would sit out the full season.? But circumstances will change as of July 16.? Given that Brees will have a shot at letting the market set his value in 2013 if he sits out for the full year, he could insist after July 16 on an agreement that the Saints won?t use the exclusive tender on him in 2013 ? or that they won?t use the franchise tender at all.

Monday might be Memorial Day, but today, friends, is Towel Day, that somewhat arbitrarily chosen time of the year when fans of Douglas Adams' Hitchhiker's Guide to the Galaxy series carry a towel around with them as a sign of appreciation. But if that's too weird for you—and I kind of hope it is—you could also just watch the best adaptation of his foremost work tonight. More »

Motherhood: Ignoring the Judgements of Others (and Not Passing ...

Welcome to Moms? Month on Dr. Stephanie! This month I will be featuring guest posts from some awesome moms around the country.? They will be sharing tips, tricks, and funny stories about motherhood.? This will be a fun celebration ? thanks for joining us!? Today?s author is Karyn Dundorf.? Welcome, Karyn!

Hi! I?m Karyn, stay at home mom of (almost) 3.? (I once had a career as an engineer, and hope to have a career in the future, but for now find joy ? most of the time ? being home with the kiddos).

I am writing this commentary on motherhood from the perspective of a mother with young children.? Right now I have a 4 year old, an almost 2 year old, and an almost here baby (Editor?s note: Karyn had a healthy baby girl a couple of weeks ago ? congrats Karyn and family!).? I?m sure one day I will look back and shake my head at some of the theories and assumptions about parenting I made at this time in my life, but this is where I am now and my ?advice? goes out to all others with small ones.

First of all, be gentle with yourself.? It?s so easy as a woman, but especially as a mother, to put all sorts of expectations on yourself.? You talk to one mother and you worry that your child is not signed up for gymnastics or Chinese, the next interaction you feel guilty for whatever food you have just fed your child, and the third playdate reminds you that your house is a hazard and somehow you still haven?t lost the baby weight.? Each mother is different and each child is different (mine for sure are different!).? I found myself constantly beating myself up over what I was doing wrong.? Here?s the deal: we?ll all make mistakes.? We will ALL do stuff wrong.? But as long as you LOVE your children and you let them know they are loved, then you have done your best.

Secondly, be flexible and learn to laugh.? All the things I planned for, proved not to be an issue.? All the things I didn?t plan for, did happen.? You can read all the books, do all the research, but nothing will prepare you for your actual child.? Heck, even my first child did not prepare me for my second child and I expect the third will throw me all sorts of new curve balls.? I love sleep, yet I didn?t get 3 hours of sleep in a row for somewhere around a year with my firstborn.? My first born responds to logic, my second thinks logic is, well, silly and something to be ignored.? My first had sensory issues and feeding was an issue.? The second has no sensory issues and yesterday I found him playing with feces.? There are times that the challenges make you want to cry.? Sometimes crying is good, but it worries toddlers when Mommy cries, so it?s often best to just laugh.

Thirdly: There is a lot of judgement out there.? The term ?mommy wars? gets used a lot.? The judgement gets old. It helps no one.? Do your best to ignore judgement and not to pass any on.? We?re all doing our best!

Lastly, motherhood is hard work.? It?s wonderful work, but it?s hard.? If you?re an introvert, you?re around a non-stop chatterbox and never get a moment to think.? If you?re an extrovert, you have that same chatterbox, but you never get a real conversation in.? It can take years (literally) to have a full night sleep.? It?s not about you.? It?s never about you.? A lot of? your identity will be wrecked during your child?s infancy.? Your body is wrecked, you are sleep deprived, and complete sentences are hard to form.?? (I?m hoping that after the initial year you can get some of it back? or at least I hope to one day have at least one uninterrupted and coherent thought).? There are days that you want to pull every. single. hair out of your head.? And then, your child smiles at you, or tells you they love you, or just giggles at a cat walking past the window and everything is better and every single sacrifice worth it.

Balloon Juice ? Blog Archive ? The Joy of Pets

By John Cole May 25th, 2012

Jumped into bed, and my back was greeted with a cold, viscous, vomitous substance. I immediately sat up, and then the dry heaving started as I raced to the bathroom peeling clothes as it dawned on me what happened and what I just landed in.

I?ve since showered and no longer have that metallic taste in my mouth where the saliva glands underneath my tongue pump overtime to keep me from throwing up on myself. I have no idea WTF I am going to do with the featherbed or the down comforter, but right now I am content to let them lie in the back yard where I threw them.

There are two options here- I pissed Rosie off and this was her vengeance, or there is something wrong with the lovely and beautiful Lily. I will sort it out in the am.

My new mantra as I go to sleep is ?I love my doggies, I love my doggies, I love my doggies??

One major, literate spot open

I am looking for one person to become part of my new roleplay "Hunting the Bound". The spot is a Male Bound. All other spots are taken, we just need one more. Heres the basic plot:

Every two years, the inhabitants of Tarsha participate in a Blood Oath ceremony. All masters who own slaves or servants are to prepare one or two slaves for a sacrifice to the apparent gods. However which of the slaves is up to the gods. In order to allow them to choose, the masters send out one/two of the least desirable slaves and set them loose. These slaves are called the Bound as they are now bound to the Blood Oath celebration. It is believed that the more slaves you sacrifice, the higher the blessing and the more likely your more worthy slaves will be spared. Exactly three hours after the first slaves are released, two hunters are also released. These are the most honoured of the slaves/servants. There job is to recapture the Bound. If the Bound are re-captured they are punished using various torture techniques before being publically executed and sacrificed. If the Hunted fail to bring back the Bound they will take the Bound's place. The ceremony has been celebrated for centauries. The Blood Oath ceremony is near. Will you be Bound or become Hunters.

CMA Foundation Donates $50000 for Children Summer Music Camps

CMA Foundation Logo Nashville, TN -- The CMA Foundation is donating $50,000 to benefit summer music education programs for 170 low-income students at the W.O. Smith Nashville Community Music School. The donation is part of CMA's Keep the Music Playing initiative, which supports music education on behalf of the hundreds of artists who perform during CMA Music Festival for free.

To date, CMA and The CMA Foundation have provided more than $6.1 million to support this important initiative, purchasing more than 4,000 instruments for 80 Metro Nashville Public Schools and providing the tools and incentives to help keep students engaged in school. The figure also includes a $1 million endowment gift to the Country Music Hall of Fame and Museum's "Words & Music" program, which assists language arts and music teachers with classroom instruction in the basics of songwriting.

"This is a wonderful opportunity for us to bridge the school year by making music education available for these low-income children during the summer," said Kitty Moon Emery, Chair of The CMA Foundation Board of Directors. "Supporting music education is an investment in the future of our city. Statistics demonstrate that students involved in arts programs have higher graduation rates and the benefits of music education translate to their other core curriculum."

"W.O. Smith Music School is grateful to the Country Music Association and The CMA Foundation for their support of our summer music camps." said Jonah Rabinowitz, Executive Director of the W.O. Smith School. "The CMA is making an incredible difference in the lives of our low-income students. This investment in children's futures will bear fruit in our community for generations to come."

The CMA Keep the Music Playing Camps at the W.O. Smith Music School offer an enrichment activity in a positive musical and social environment that many students could not otherwise afford. Four sessions for summer campers are offered including CMA Resident Camp; CMA Camp BackBeat; and two, week-long day camps for children ages 8 to 11.

In total, 170 children receive expert music training in a fun and rewarding atmosphere for an average cost of $300 per child.

"The camps are a natural extension of our school year program and demand a strong commitment from students toward their musical education and development of native and learned skills," said Rabinowitz. "For many campers, more advancement in musical competency will be achieved during the concentrated week of learning than in the entire previous school year when attention and time is divided and at a premium."

CMA Resident Camp is a six-day, residential camp for students ages 12-18 and includes a daily schedule of activities including private lessons, music theory, instrumental ensembles, chorus, self-directed practice time, and a musical theater production.

CMA Camp BackBeat is a weeklong experience for students ages 9 to 18 who are interested in commercial music. Students study guitar, bass, drums, piano, and voice. The camp is specifically designed to help bands form so that they can continue working together throughout the academic year. The students learn about a variety of genres from professional musicians including Country, rock, pop, hip-hop, soul, and R&B.

CMA Music Day Camp (two sessions) is a week-long program for students 8 to 11. This particular program provides a positive musical and social experience within a creative environment. Daily activities include theory class, chorus, performances with guest artists, and field trips. The camp culminates with a performance for the students' family and friends.

This is CMA's second donation to the music school. In 2009, CMA's Keep the Music Playing program provided $14,000 to underwrite the travel costs to send 40 students from W.O. Smith School to Washington D.C. for a special concert series and educational workshop hosted by the President and First Lady. Part of the students' trip was captured by a GAC crew for a one-hour, news special that aired on the cable network.

Founded in 1984, the W.O. Smith School was created for the purpose of making quality music instruction available to talented, interested, deserving children from low income families at the nominal fee of 50 cents a lesson. Instruction is provided by a 220-member volunteer faculty of area musicians from many elements of the Nashville music scene including studio musicians, symphony players, college professors, public school teachers, church musicians, private teachers, and university students, who each donate up to four hours a week teaching their students.

The school serves more than 700 students, ages 6 to 18, representing academic schools from across Metro Davidson County and Middle Tennessee. Students must qualify for the reduced or free lunch program in Metro schools to take part. The school offers introductory classes for pre-instrumentalists, individual and group lessons in all band and orchestra instruments, piano, guitar and voice. The school, which is a nonprofit educational institution, also provides computer assisted instruction in music fundamentals and theory, classes in composition, music technology, and recording.
