The Washington?Animal Rescue League has opened its doors to more than a dozen dogs and cats displaced by superstorm Sandy in October.

The animals had been living in temporary shelters in New York City until they arrived in the District on Monday afternoon.

According to WARL's Matt Williams, the shelter received eight dogs and five cats.

While "some will turn around pretty quickly," Williams said, they will all go through medical and behavioral evaluation before being made available for adoption.

WARL?said the animals were all either abandoned by their owners, surrendered, or were strays.
